The fact that a regular electric sedan is already pretty much on par with a current M3 and looking at the numbers they are showing with the new Tesla Roadster, it won't be long until electric sports cars will have left ICEs in the dust.

I kinda already figured that my M240i (yes, not a "real" M) will be my last ICE car. Living 20 feet from the water and knowing that where I live will be under water in perhaps 20 years time kinda hits home that things are going to have to change.
I can definitely see my next car being electric for sure as well...

What I was keen for was an electric front axle such as the i8 setup with a mid-front mounted S63Tu similar to where the AMG GT's engine is mounted. Keep the dual clutch and we are good

I think BMW are getting caught out here, either don't have the tech or poor management direction. Next gen competitors (C63, RS5 et al) will almost certainly be hybrid which will leave the G80/ G82 models either having a USP or looking way outdated (and of course, a massive grille).

An M8 hybrid if made will weight 5,000lbs and will never compete with an ole 918 let alone its future replacement.

Id bet it could never compete with the Taycan which is the only car it could be judged against.

Amen, cause just figures on paper alone, mean absolutely zero.

That's why I enjoy my (EU) E36 M3 more than most other cars.

I personally think they absolutely should run an INDYCAR program with the hybrid V6s and then make the necessary qol changes to get that engine and hybrid motor into an M5 for a true successor to the E60.

Otherwise hybrid is dangerous. You can have 2 types of hybrids because of the way batteries work.

One is a long range low 'boost' type. See the 330e.

The other is a high boost type like a LMP1. It's dumps and returns energy at massive high speeds but gets terrible range.

My worry is M cars just become heavy shitty slow barges and not a properly cool P1 inspired car.

The INDYCAR as inspiration would be perfect.

I would love to see the implementation of electric turbos to get rid of the turbo lag. Very happy about the news in general but the lag is keeping me from buying an M4 at the moment (I still have my E93). Hopefully we will see that from BMW soon!

Like everything, it's all about the execution. I think the hybrid tech certainly makes some sense in the larger M vehicles, but how much sense depends on the details. I'm fairly happy that they aren't bringing this tech to the smaller M cars, as I would like to keep the availability of a manual trans. Outside of the Honda CR-Z, I'm not aware of any hybrid vehicles that are or were ever available with a manual. If BMW can find a way to offer the manual with a hybrid powertrain though, then hybrid everything!

Weight and packaging are still an issue. The industry needs smaller and lighter solid state battery tech.
