Actually, it is pretty simple...assuming that you are using DHCP for your clients and your chosen DHCP server has the ability to hand out a custom DNS server IP address. If not, you can still use it by having a home-grade router use the Pi-hole for DNS instead of the upstream ISP or one of the free/paid cloud resolvers. You just lose the per-client filtering options.

I have used Pi-hole for a few years, specifically to block FB and FBCDN.

Funny IT professional story from yesterday. I was asked by a local elementary school yesterday for my opinion on a $150 black box that they found for filtering traffic on classroom tablets. The vendor's web site only has one picture of the device, and even that couldn't hide that it was a Raspberry Pi. Not a single picture of the config/interface screens, and no online manual to see that it is a re-branded Pi-hole. At less than a 50% markup and bundled with lifetime support and K-12 filter database subscription, it isn't worth the headache of telling them how to make their own to save $50.....

So when you ask a colleague to turn off their system, do you tell them to shut your pi-hole?

I have, including my siblings and I, 46 cousins who I've been very close to all my life. And their children of varying ages, who I'm less close to but still somewhat interested in. I keep in touch with my youth basketball team and a select group of close friends from high school, and another from college. We live all around the world and by some twist of fate, none of them are in the same state as me.

I hate FB and I am very concerned with the privacy issues, but I feel like I don't have a choice but to stay on to be able to stay in touch with people I care about. I am only searchable by friends, I ignore/reject any requests that aren't within these circles, I max out all the privacy settings and I hardly post my own stuff (I do reply to friends' posts tho). If there's anything else I could do to increase security, I'll do it, but I feel like I don't have a choice but to stay on FB...unless all my friends and loved ones migrate somewhere else

Never had one, and never will. From what I hear from various friends, to much negativity and gossip. Just not my cup of tea. But, it has to be your decision M_Six. Do what’s best for you!

I've also joined a few groups that have kept me in touch with former military friends and cycling groups and so on. There is definitely an upside to Facebook.

That said, Facebook the App is insidious. It worms its way into everything. And Facebook itself is sadly a net negative drag on society. Way too many people use it as their sole source of information and believe everything they read on it. And Facebook the Corporation seems to have no qualms about letting pure BS run amok on their system, or about selling the personal data of every member.

So now I'm torn between leaving or staying. I personally don't post much on FB aside from pics and the occasional post in a cycling group. And I do use it occasionally to have a quick chat with folks I normally wouldn't if it weren't for Facebook. But I'm finding it harder to justify to myself continuing to feed it. Sort of like feeding one particularly friendly rodent or raccoon or stray cat. You know all it wants from you is to keep feeding it, but you keep doing it anyway.

My nephew cleared himself of FB years ago and claims it was the best thing he's ever done. Anyone else ever delete a Facebook account or just not start one in the first place? Or, is it a case of using the beast for what you want out of it and accepting the inevitable cost of doing so?

What are your thoughts on Facebook?
Your nephew uses other social media because, to his generation, FB was taken over by us old people.

None of the negatives you mention affect me. I am on and will stay on

I dropped FB years ago and don’t miss it a bit. I had many of the same issues already mentioned (political/religious platform, bragging, people posting pictures of the their meal…every…single…day). I too started unfollowing folks and found my list got pretty small and those remaining people I kept in contact with thru other means. Eventually, I decided the privacy issues did not make it worth it.

It’s funny to me, but it seems people feel pressure to post no matter how trivial the item. It’s almost like post or perish. I have never regretted deleting it and don’t miss it a bit.

dont want to judge people using facebook. poeple use social media in different ways. so up to everyones thinking but in my mind it takes so much capacity of your selves. everbody is showing i got this and i got that, i do like this and that. so much show. people are stalking you, searching for things they can use aggainst you and so on. i dont need that. i would recommend you to leave it. enjoy your time with real friends in real live. i also have no insta or something else. that is saving a lot of time and capacity. i do not understand those likes collectors with hundreds of "friends"... you never stay in touch with those in real life!

FB/IG are, unfortunately, a breeding ground for humanity's vanity and superficial ideals. Add the data mining and lack of privacy, and I'm out.

I sometimes wish I could have access to the marketplace or groups, but it's not worth dealing with the above. I don't miss it at all.

Sure, that handles one aspect, but I don't want my privacy invaded to that extent, so still no dice. I am managing just fine without their marketplace.

I've never had it. Not that I'm against technology and some types of social media. I just have never personally found the value in it. I see the amount of hours people have spent on it and compare it to the hours Ive spent on more productive things and remind myself how glad I am not to have got caught up in it.

Ditch it. I can't imagine anyone on their death bed wishing they spent more time on Facebook.

I had FB for years, deleted my account in the fall of 2017 and I do not miss it at all. I would say I am actually happier without it.
