Nothing wrong with sport hybrid power train as long as ICE is somewhat exciting.

This vague but... Each manufacturer gets evaluated for efficiency so some cars will need to be EV to meet the requirement. Lucky for me... I'll be happy to pick up an outdated 2020 M5 in 2022 |

I would be interested in the M5 going back to an Inline-6 and adding some sort of electrified setup to the engine. I love the setup in my CLS 53 (Turbo I6 + 48-Volt Mild Hybrid + Electric Supercharger (runs off 48V system)) and it adds a lot of character as well as a great feel in how the power-band works incredibly smoothly (no lag with the supercharger filling in boost where the turbo is still spooling) as well as a seamless stop/start system so I don't have to press the off button every time I enter the car. I imagine Merc will likely use this setup even further on the next generation of the E63S, but I would love to see BMW do something similar. Only issue with the electrification setup like others have mentioned is weight management.

So,this is future i don't accept...simply as indigo child born in 70's...i wlll never buy electric car...moreover M5 with electric engine is blasphemy..so my advice for BMW...you can put electric engine in any other model, you can even call it M supersport, but if you can understand that people adore manual transmission in M model,is it hard to see that some of us want V8 under the hood...i have a feeling in next 5 years we will be like Mad Max with V8 engine...sorry,but i think near 700 hp that M5 comp now produce is more then enough for all petrol heads...i will always choose "old" V8 with 700 hp vs electric with 3 batteries and over 1000 hp...
So maybe BMW should offer us simple V8,not hybrid! As times go by,and new information arrive,im more and more convinced that 2019 F90 M5 comp will be keeper in my family till end of the world. Deda |

Hybrid M5 looks cool to me. I'd like to see BMw enter INDYCAR and offer the same V6 hybrid in the M5 personally.
All electric? Sorry not M. Can't do track day then it doesn't belong under the M subrand. i5? Sure whatever . |

I am very aware of the limitations. Thanks for the link!

I was more referring to just the stock market, Tesla is worth more than Daimler, BMW, and VW group combined, and all Tesla does is electric cars and barely scraping by. And yet the stock went up another 63 dollar today to almost $900 with a market cap of $166B (BMW is about $38B). So the current perception is making electric cars is more valuable. Whether or not this should the case is up for another debate. To me it still baffles my mind that Tesla is worth more than German big 3 combined but for now that is the case. Hence I said I'm not surprised German automakers have to announce or plan more and more electric cars just to show investors and shareholders that they are keeping up with the times. |

M5 and electric in the same sentence......something seems off there. BMW, yes go ahead and make a 1000 hp supercar, just don't call it an M5.

E39 M5 still wins, not only in the feel department, but definitely sound department as well. At the end of the day BMW just like every other car manufacturer has to follow the ecological, economic and safety standards. An s62 would never survive in 2024. I complained back in 2010 when I got my e60 m5 and then again when I got my F10 M5, but the truth is that I enjoyed every one of them and had fun learning about different aspects and characteristics of each. As far as the feel and overall enjoyment the e39 still wins in my heart, but I will continue to get every one of the new m5 generations.

Would love to have a modded 750hp hybrid m5! Maybe tuned and piped could get closer to 850hp. With the massive torque hit from the electric motors, sounds like fun to me.

The first model year or two will be a maintenance nightmare as mechanics learn a totally alien power train and try to debug issues that will certainly pop up.
Start saving for Tires and Coal.....you'll need both for the electric M5. Mike

No thanks. I don't need more power. Just make it lighter, please! Save the electricity for the non-M cars. Nobody needs this much power. We have already reached the point where you can only step on the throttle for 4 seconds at a time before going to jail or flying off a mountain. I just got back from a spirited drive on empty mountain roads and my "base" 2018 M5 easily gets up to 110 mph on 40mph switchbacks! This is insanse and plenty to get my adrenaline pumping.
