Here is a data point from our recent car buying experience. We were considering Kia Telluride, alongside Volvo XC-90, X7 and GLS. All the Telluride in So. Cal. are sold out, and they are going about $15k over sticker without any ability to test drive. That makes them around $60k before tax or around $1k to lease. And you have to buy it sight unseen before car even arrives to the dealership, since so many people want it. We ended up buying a X7, but we would have seriously considered a Telluride if they weren't going so much over MSRP (it's a principle thing...)

That's a lie, I was going for a Cayenne hybrid, and when I saw the new G05 and remember all the bad times the 955 gave me and the unreliable it was, I just change my mind in search of some peace. That Cayenne S was parked and the speedometer and odometer star to count with the car still, and sometimes the handles get crazy and open and close multiple times and the panoramic roof close itself. The dealer was the worst, imagine that. All that make me change the brand.

The problem is that the history is repeating again but wit the new X5. My car is like possessed. Lights stay on even auto is stablisheth, voice assistance said disable at the screen, quality problems, and the worst is that from time to time the car just lose power in a U turn corner in a parking building under 20 Km/h because of a DSC overactivation, not other car does been then e83, e53, e70, etc; even most of the times the G05 does it perfect. The worst, the dealer, he said that this less than suboptimal behavior is the normal response of the car. I have taken videos to then where the car chokes itself, I also take the technical advisor manager to see it, and that's what he said. Worst, he tell me to drive it at sport or to disable DSC to solve the failure. Crazy. Maybe some day get the videos on net and share then.

Almost all my life driving european, but if that continues, I would end driving asian or northamerican cars. Even Kia looks not bad if guarantees of peace of mind came with that. You can no blame a client to run away from this, and tell that the problem is not enough money, when it's the product.

Wasn't there a thread here from a poster who's son bought a new Kia and the engine failed within 5k miles? Just because you are having issues that doesn't mean your anecdotal evidence is true for the brand. All manufacturers have issues as they all score over 100 problems/100 vehicles. Some have more than others but you can get a lemon from any brand.

As for Kia you have to hand it to Hyundai as they worked hard to improve their brand and they did it smart without cutting corners like the domestics have in the past. They hired quality people from other manufacturers and stole a lot of key design cues from other manufacturers including BMW. They have caught up and surpassed some domestics and Japanese automakers. I certainly would not purchase a Nissan over a Hyundai/Kia. The biggest upcoming hurdle is if they have the ability to become a trend setter as they have got to this point by improving quality and emulating other brands. I want to see if they can create their own trend setting vehicles. The Telluride is a good start for sure.

I was interested in the Kia Stinger 3.3 because it was a nice car and I was bored of the usual bunch, in the last 5 years I've had a Jag XE-R 250, a 340i, 335d and M140i.

Out of them lot (including the Stinger) the M140i was the budget basement bargain, didn't actually cost much more than a Focus ST. Perception is a funny old thing.. I bought a 340i but that's for a whole other bunch of reasons..

Not sure how much that's still the case, but their products are quite exceptional nowadays.

Not saying this is indicative of all Kia Souls. But a friend of mine just had to get the DCT trans replaced on her 2020 Soul GT turbo with only 7500 miles. The problems actually started earlier but it took till 7500 miles for the issues with the trans to be catastrophic; meaning engine revving but car won't move.

When this happened, I did a search online and found there are others that have reported similar issues on the Kia forums.

It’s popular because of the cheap price, good styling, and warranty. Other than maybe the Teluride, I do think they are a still few steps behind their competitors. I also question how they hold up in years down the road.

Or any other brand really. Cars are way more reliable in general than they used to be but with the sheer amount of electronics on cars pretty well no brand is immune to issues.

My anecdotal experience:
Aside from the cars in my profile, we also have a 2011 Hyundai Tucson that we've owned since new. It now as 153k miles. The only items we've replaced (besides normal maintenance) was the driver's side window switches and an AC compressor. The engine and transmission have been fine.

People buy them because they're generally durable cars with the features they want for a price they can afford. They're just not great driver's cars---but then again that's not what most people want.

What does popular mean? Because they are affordable and ppl are so cheap to save a couple of thousand compared to a Honda or Toyota with proven long term reliability?
Initial quality is way over thought. I would feel embarrassed by a Kia badge, I'd rather have an old European or Japanese car if money were tight, the Korean cars copy everything

What do you mean by long term reliability? My 2005 Kia Sorento made it 153K miles and 13 Years of salty Michigan winters before I gave up on it. That car has been off-roaded in the dunes and in the mud. I drove it from Montana to Maine. From South Dakota to South Carolina. And it was rusty, but still running when I sold it. I didn't pay for any repairs outside of warranty except for leaky exhaust and AC compressor. How much more long time reliability can you ask for in Northeast winters? I'd argue not many cars can do better.

I replaced it with an '18 Santa Fe. It's still sitting in my garage back in the States. And the best thing is to see how popular Hyundai/Kia is in Germany. I see many of them daily. Germans are utilitarian. They get it too.

Apropos quality, if Japanese/German cars are that much better, why can't they offer a warranty as long as the Hyundai/Kia? .............. Or conversely, if Kia's are sub-par in quality, how can they be financially viable with longest warranty in the marker? .................... Food for thought.

I know badge snobbery exists. I just choose to look past it.
