It's the price of admission if you live in Canada where there is gravel on the roads for 6 months of the year. This is a six figure car. Add young children and the amount of glossy black plastic they are putting on new cars today on top of that and it's really a no brainer. Full ppf for me.

I'm only doing PPF on the front bumper. I drive my cars about 5,000 miles per year and I've never really had issues with extensive rock chips. Regarding swirls and scratches, I'm a hobby detailer and really love spending time on the car polishing and coating.

If I didn't live in the Northeast and daily drive my car year-round, it would be a harder decision. After having full coverage on my last car I consider it a requirement. There are more benefit than just chips and scrapes. The car is easier to keep clean (especially with ceramic oner the PPF), and while I still don't go through automatic washes, I will go through touchless to get off salt in the winter. The chems in touchless washes are not great for paint. Regardless of whether I got it or not if I didn't live in here, I would still get the headlights done and front bumper. It's dirt cheap and given the cost of modern headlights, the extra insurance is nice. It's 100% saved a headlight in the past for me and I'll never 'not' have it on them.

It's true if one lives where winter is a thing, more gravel, grit and grime for sure. I live in Canada and for at least a few months or so there is gravel and at times whatever they put down as a melting agent. I'm thinking I may do at least the front of the car.

I think you re spot on. I've driven my 335 in Midwest year around for 13 years , 200,000 miles without paint protection film. I hand wash the car myself which I enjoy every 2-3 weeks and the paint is in great shape except for rock chips on the hood and some scuffs on the bumper which probably started becoming noticeable even after just a year or two. I think your advice makes sense even if cost of rock chip repair is less than PPF.

Expecting my G80 to arrive soon and will probably keep it just as long but will probably use the e92 in the harsh weather. Any other problem areas with regards to rock chips on g80 besides front hood/fenders/bumper/mirrors?

I'm torn. I've had an SMB M3 CS for three years now. No PPF but I did full ceramic. I daily drive it and there are some tiny chips that I only notice when I wash it. I have some touch up for that and it has been fine. My G80 will be an individual color so I'm torn. Ceramic for sure though. I think that is well worth the cost. My car still beads up beautifully when it is wet and the depth of the paint is amazing. Washing is a breeze. When clean, people ask me if it is new all the time.

But I'm still on the fence for the new one. I mean, as someone here said, if it got really bad it's probably cheaper to go to a detailer and have them paint correct and fix any chips....

said I was thinking of Doing but my car goes in Monday. Only 800 miles and I see one small chip, barely noticeable but with Dravit, it's making me be overly cautious and I want to enjoy my car. Getting full front, mirrors and rocker panels done. Also Getting windows tinted for 3100.

if you are leasing it, who cares ?! lol
But owning it, I say PPF goes long way. had done on my previous F82 and with G82, when straight to get the PPF on day 1.

Living in Northern Virginia, with Trucks bypassing major hwy, flying rocks are common. got a small windsheild chip within a week.
Planning on getting windsheild film .

I got one on the crease of the bumper with only 900 miles on car and said...thats it and appointment made. Get my car back tomorrow and although 3100.00 light in the pocket, I can drive my car in peace.

The PPF crowd on this board remind me of people that do MLM like Amway or HerbalLife.

Nope
Done it in the past and not really happy that it's only good for eight years. I never recoup it in resale anyway.
So I will enjoy the factory paint for years to come And not obsess over the imperfect application of PPF around the car

o each their own, I thought the same way but with as shitty as roads are now and the debris kicking up on car, my 80k I spent was hard earned and I want to protect it. I can't and won't by cars every few months or years.

Informative thread, I appreciate all the opinions.

I am purchasing my G82. Not sure how many years I will keep it, but so long as the car does not have any significant repairs out of warranty, I plan to for a while. PPF question - does the film ever yellow or lift / fray on the edges? I suspect the first answer is "buy a high quality film and no". But 5 years later, it looks just as clear as day 1?

I love looking at a nice automotive paint, and don't want the film to diminish the appearance.

Last, if I PPF the front end to the doors, and do nothing or ceramic the rest, will there be a noticeable difference in the two different treatments?

I leased mine - didn't know if I'd like the G80 enough to add it to the long term fleet. Turns out I do after 2 months of ownership.

Got the bumper PPF'ed upon delivery bc that is bound to get beaten on with gravel in winter and bugs in summer. The hood got a small rock chip yesterday, and I'm torn up about it.

I plan to trade this car post-LCI for an individual color. That I'll buy and that will get PPF all over.

Long story short - if you plan on keeping for a while and/or have OCD and/or spec a special order color, it's probably worth it. Otherwise…PASS.

I've had PPF on two cars, one purchased used and the other new but the dealer had already done it. I would never pay for it.

It does protect against rock chips. It will not prevent them. This "self-healing" nonsense is just that. If it gets torn, it ain't gonna stop being torn.

A former coworker of mine had the product on his car, and after about 8 years it started to yellow. It also dried and cracked, and cost him nearly as much to have it removed as it did to have it put on.

On the first car that I had with it (993 911) the edges lifted a little bit, which then got dirt stuck to them, and it looked awful.

The second car (F87) it was fine, but the paint doesn't shine and reflect like it does without a piece of plastic on top of it. IMHO.

Natch, different products, different installers, who knows?

I don't mind detailing, and I have learned how to use touch-up paint, wet sand and polish out any rock chips. I'm now about 50% to where if the paint was a good match, you can't tell that there was ever a rock chip there. The other 50% it's noticeable in the right light. But my kids are grown, gone, and I have the time to do that kind of stuff.

I don't find this part to be true at all. The PPF'd areas look just as shiny and reflect as the non-PPF'd parts to me on my car.

The forum won't let me go back and edit my post. What I should have written was:
... the non-purple paint doesn't shine and reflect like it does without a piece of plastic on top of it.

Yes, your car looks fabulous.
