Your 'one of my goals' is the way to do it - and your point about 'even if not a particularly high spec' is exactly the reason. You get to get exactly what you want on the car, nothing extra and nothing missing. If you don't want heated/cooled cup holders, or don't need HK audio upgrade; you don't need to have them! If you're looking for a low low spec car, ordering it may even be your only option to find it.

I'm currently hemming and hawing on my next order and whether or not it's going to be an individual car. I figured to always be leasing my SUVs, but I ended up in a very good spot on my upcoming turn-in and it might push me to purchase an individual spec car. The commentary about getting sick of the color and that being a high point to lease is very on-target. The color I'm holding as front-runner right now is one that I might not love in 4 years.

Anyway - no matter what your opinion is on this question; we're all pretty lucky to even be able to opine on it.

I suppose in that case... what would be your preference? My intent was to guage what makes more sense. I'm inclined to lease all my cars but wasn't sure if I was missing something when considering an individual color. Seems like the concensus is it would be treated no differently than any other lease vs buy decision.

Oh, don't mind me. I'm just being a pain in the ass here. Typically I lean towards a lease because it benefits my particular use case and risk tolerance. Certainly so on any M model, doubly so on a first year one.

Let's say: I decide to order any car with the conclusion being I will buy it , whether as new or post-lease. I then do some math to see what my total lease costs + buyout would look like in comparison to just a straight purchase on day 1. If the delta is reasonable (this is a sliding scale based on multiple factors: spec'd MSRP/market conditions/my mindset of the day), I typically decide that the lease is cheap insurance against:
  • Any type of 'carfax' incident - crushing residual value, certainly so on any M product
  • The car wearing out its welcome prematurely
  • new features/design greatly devaluing the model I just got

Then, as lease is ending - if the car has been solid, I still like/love it, the new model doesn't speak to me - then I end up buying it out.

That's the path I thought my current G05 would take ; but with current market conditions I'm exploring what exactly it would cost me to replace it with a brand new one, maybe with some different options.

If I can get what I think is reasonable middle-of-the-road value for my G05 - to replace it with an exact copy of itself just 2.5 years newer, my (pre-tax) difference looks like 12-14k. If this holds up as I explore trading it officially, I will definitely opt to order another one and buy it out from day 1. I've loved my current one, and with my lease equity it would make sense to go that route I think.

It's a great bonus to leasers that the individual cost can be residualized, and I'd probably take advantage of it most times when available if I was getting a good # on the car. In todays world with +MSRP sales, I don't know that I'd be happy to check the $5k box.

IIRC for my g05 they weren't taking individual orders yet when I ordered.

You like your X5 but rather than buying it out you are going to purchase another X5 with similar options (highly unlikely given the current shortages but that aside). While you will get a newer vehicle it will cost you more to get a copy of what you have now. Sure the trade in value will be higher than usual but so will the cost. On top of that you will get the depreciation hit on the new one as we are starting to see the used car values dropping.

It would seem to me that the better strategy (both from a financial and new vehicle point of view) would be to buy out the lease now (which should save you some money) and hold onto it a few years. By then the LCI will be out and seasoned and you can make the decision to keep yours or buy/lease a new one.

Obviously there are many personal reasons, other than financial, for getting a new one, keeping one, leasing, purchasing etc. so it always comes down to what one is comfortable with doing and wants to do.

Some solid points. Appreciate the input. I'm definitely seriously considering ordering individual colors for my next cars. I WAS in a similar boat with my G05... considering buying it out... until my wife decided to hit a pole with it... wiping out any market benefit to resale value. So lease return it will be... . (Another major benefit to leasing beyond the math) I'm thinking G80 to replace my G20 this fall and G07 to replace our G05. I know G80 has individual options, but haven't checked on G07.

I don't disagree overall, this would all be predicated on me getting the right # back for mine. If I don't, I don't - No sweat.

I'm not at my work desktop to get you the exact numbers but my buyout is ~~50. Market value in my area for similar equipped used cars is 67-71k. Hypothetical; If I can get 68, I'm taking the 18 over buyout, and ordering a car at Msrp for ~~78-82k.

I'm hoping to leverage the current market as I can be without an suv for a few months waiting for my new one to be slotted/built.

With this car there have been a few things that needed dealer visits. It's my wife's "primary" and id opt to buy extended warranty if we kept it—so that's another ~2800-3500 depending on term.

So, my expected 50k OOP + 18k + 3500 is my "even" number. To get a brand new car, re-evaluate some options and spec, do another nice delivery road trip; and in 5-7 years be selling a 2023 instead of a 2020—-all of that is within my appetite to see them as close enough it makes sense.

My ability to be patient is one that can serve me well if I can capitalize on the inflated used market currently. Even more so if things come back to normal before my new one is built and I can get <MSRP on it.
