When getting quotes for our Ford Escape Hybrid, I noticed Carmax has really changed their pricing model and has raised their offers in attempt to complete harder against the Carvana's of the world.

Now this was 4+ months ago and the world has changed again with rising interest rates and the Carvana's of the world getting hit hard, but I'd certainly get a quote from both Carvana and Carmax if selling my car now.

Another possible place is givemethevin.com ... they actually provided the largest offer for my Escape Hybrid. They are a smaller outfit and I had to search a bit to find my contact on the day of the sale, but had a clean sale with no additional issues.

With this in the back of my head I will probably be dealing with CarMax or the dealership, whoever comes out on top.
UPDATE:

Interestingly, my most recent Carvana quote tanked $3K over 2 weeks, while WeBuyAnyCar came up ~$1500 and is now competing with CarMax. Seems with the business Carvana is apparently losing, WBAC may be helping to keep competition against CarMax.

Thankfully I didn't sell my vehicle to Carvana prior to purchasing the G80. I did although use the Carvana price to help the dealer trade in being offered. I got 1k under what Carvana was offering, but I did get $1750 more than Carmax quoted. It was a win/win in my book.

I don't know how they get away not giving titles for cars. I used to work at dealership and customers called cops if there was no title on time

Mid 2020 I bought my first Model 3 from them and sold them my C7 corvette at the same time. Apart from some hiccup with delivery being delayed because the truck broke down or something I didn't really have any issues. In fact I thought to myself this is the shit and all car buying SHOULD be like this.

I have not dealt with them since and while I've sold a couple of cars to Vroom (who seem shadier than Carvana to me) I found that Carvanas offers have not been that great as of late. Vroom always beats them and last car Carmax actually beat both of them.

CarMax hasn't been too bad so far, trying to sell the X3 since it has a payment, but the Highlander I inherited doesn't. I got a quote last month. Took that to the dealer and they offered 4K less. Just happened to stop into ta little Indy down the block, and they offered me +500 if I showed them the CarMax offer.
BMWFA had an issue with electronic payments, and I went on vacation, so just went back to CarMax yesterday. They gave me the same offer. Went in to complete the deal, with my pay-off quote in hand, and they sent me to get a DEALER pay-off quote. I can't tell the difference without both in my hands, but BMWFA said there are no taxes

Wife didn't want to deal, for 500, with the Indy because we had previous issue years ago with her sister's trade-in that never got paid until after the DA was involved. That was at a dealer, why is CarMax going to be any different? At this point, it's down to "yes, dear" I just want the X3 gone.

Well, I walked into CM with the dealer payoff quote. About 45 minutes later they had me sign about 4 lines, then handed me an equity check for 2500, and I went outside for my ride home.

They did add 5 days @ 3.50 to the 7/29 valid date on the dealer payoff. I certainly hope it doesn't take THAT long to get a check to BMWFA. With that in mind, I hope to get a second residual check in a few weeks.

Folks there seem to be a different between buying from and sell to these companies. I sound like people sell to them it appears to go well other than who offers the better price and I think that depend on if they have customer already lined up to buy your car.

The point I was highlighting was buying from a company like Carvana, that is where most of the issue show up and Illinois just band Carvana from selling in Illinois for the second time this year. They will not be allowed to start selling again until they resolve all the title issue they have with people in Illinois who bought cars from them.

I tried to buy a car from them, found a beautiful M240 with everything I was looking for, including some incredible custom black wheels. But every time I tried to bid on the car, it told me I was too late and had to wait till the person who previously bid on it either made the purchase or moved on. Did that six or seven times. Finally gave up. I will say the car was white, and what with the heat wave going on right now, I do regret having a black car.

For most people, a car purchase is the second biggest purchase of their life after their house. It's shocking that so many people are willing to buy a car unseen.

You don't want to know how many people buy their houses sight unseen then.

As long as one can refuse delivery and there is a good warranty, why not? It's not like the old days where a test drive was pretty much necessary to make sure the car didn't smoke or the suspension was shot. Warranties are much longer now. They aren't the 12mo/12K warranties of yesteryear.

It's a pain to go through financing and get a loan for a car and then total disappointment when the car arrives.

If you truly don't care, then it is ok. But I want to see the car - every chip, nick and scratch on it before I consider purchasing a car. There's only so much you can tell from some pictures.

New cars bought sight unseen is ok... but no two used cars are the same. You can't judge condition based on mileage and price.

My current inventory includes one near some year-round warm weather south of you. Shall I put your name on it? A simple $1000 (US) deposit will hold it until you can see it in person.

That's not how this works.

First, you send me a deposit

THEN, and only then, do I tell you where it's at

Next you send me a down payment, just to show you can make the monthly payments

Once we establish that over a couple of month, then I send you sat images that may or may not include YOUR actual bridge

I wouldn't feel comfortable agreeing to a car being delivered to my house, sit unseen for a variety of reasons. If you are so lazy you can't go and look at a car, that's a serious problem (not you, in general)

If the car is out of state, I would fly out of state to inspect the vehicle. Maybe I'm old school

Yeah... I'm not saying I would do it. That's why I only search within a 100 mile radius.

I've only done that twice, and both were E30s. The first one we had a clause in the contract that if it wasn't as presented when it arrived, he would pay for shipping back to Florida.

The 2nd time, a friend who owns a BMW shop up in New Jersey went and picked up the car for me and did some work on it before I flew out to drive it home. Which if you guys ever need great service for anything GutenParts, Levent is a mensch.
