Like most things there's debate over the origin. Some say it comes from potters who were trying to make round vases and had to scrap them if they turned out oblong or pear shaped. Others say it comes from RAF pilots training to fly loops and ending up with a pear shaped loop instead of a round one.

Interesting. The one I heard was that a circle or balloon which was perfectly round gets messed up and turned into a 'pear' shape.

You misread, he most definitely is, but he's much, much more and I think his message is even greater than what he provided in the comedic sphere.

Sorry to have misread you. You had me confused by your words that said, "He's not really a comedian...".

I do agree that he was much more. I hate ranking lists, but certainly he was among the top comedians of all time and my personal favorite for sure.

I only ever saw George Carlin live once. He walked on stage and after a minute or so of applause he calmly took a long swig from a water bottle and opened with something along the lines of "So why is it that no-one talks about pussy farts anymore?". The audience erupted and it just kept getting better from there.
We lost a good one when he passed.
