No need to overthink this - a new, black 330i is in the budget and she gets what she wants. I'm sure an intelligent young woman such as herself can be talked out of PITA diesels without warranties

What city in the southwest? If it is one of the desert areas, I could see a black car or convertible being undesirable in the insane heat.....

A black Diesel in the Southwest sounds like a recipe for disaster. Dieselheads are a special dedicated bunch of tech-savvy people and the whole AdBlue thing is quite the debacle in the USA, which is why the automakers have abandoned Diesel models. So a Diesel will be relatively old and come with reliability and maintainability issues. The black part: What Vreihen16 and Carravagio said.
I understand she no doubt remembers that 328d with affection but that was back before the Diesel sh!t hit the fan.

From another perspective, I learned living with black cars on the West Coast that they required constant cosmetic maintenance to look good. It was like an on-off switch - because they showed everything, either they looked their best or they looked dirty. Having tired of the constant cleaning, I switched to white vehicles when possible, and the difference was remarkable.

This thread is interesting -- we are all trying to discourage your daughter's desire to have a black Diesel. Virtually all negative. With good reason, though, I might add.
On the convertible question: A CPO or recent-vintage BMW 4 series convertible is going to be a retractable hardtop model. I think those are cool, but I wonder about the medium-term reliability of that top mechanism.

I like the look of Audi, I like the finish of Audi. I've had one. But I did not like the 7speed DCT (and I deeply suspect there was some tranny related issue going on just before I returned it to the dealer, fortunately managed to have the check engine light off before I returned it) and the turbos blew without any mods and I was just outside of warranty.
As a result, the likelihood of me owning another Audi outside of warranty approximates zero. I'd probably lease another within the warranty period, but never own. I hate Mercedes. With a passion. Will not own. Honestly, a well maintained E92 M3 with low miles would probably serve her well. My friends E92 lasted over 300K kms and then he sold it, still running well. If not that, then a newer BMW probably but be a step down in looks and performance. What about leasing her a car instead of purchasing - tell her the lease is paid up until the end, gets her into some higher end cars. As much as I said about Audi, I still like the RS3. |

I'm probably way too practical and boring. Given that you can afford to out-right buy her a $50K car for a college graduation present and will give her a down payment on a home at some point, I would assume that she has no college debt as well? If my assumption is correct, that alone is a MASSIVE step ahead compared to the vast majority coming out of school, especially law school. It's also one hell of a graduation present.
Rather than making her life pretty easy with a number of free cars, no college loans, and an eventual home down payment, perhaps an alternative choice could be to give her a $50K check and give her investment advice on what where she could invest it and perhaps spend a bit on a new car if she really needs a new car. By doing that, she has some control rather than getting another thing handed to her/given to her and she bares some responsibility and has control. Assuming that she's going into law practice, her job will be incredibly hard for the next 2 to 5 years as an associate at firm. It's meat grinder and like being in a young doctor in residency. She will have little time for much of anything. But she'll be making good money from the start. Maybe then, she could get the car she wants with own money. My son is going to college next year. He won't have loans because he worked his tail off in HS to graduate with 30 hours of college credit, will get some scholarships, and we've set aside enough to cover the remainder. His first and only car was pristine hand me down 2015 Outback 3.6R which he has taken great care of for two years. My 14 y/o daughter said she wants the Outback badly and he said he wants something sporty like a used Mazda 3, Civic Si, or BRZ/GT86 once he graduates college. My plan is to "loan" him $20K next year and he'll give the Outback to his sister. My loan to him will be with no interest and the monthly payments low. The loan will be forgiven when he graduates. His college graduation present will be a Vanguard account and $10K invested in S&P500 index funds and some bonds. I'm all for giving kids help if you can afford it, but I also strongly feel that they need to bare some responsibility and have to demonstrate strong work and personal ethic regardless of how wealthy the household is. I personally couldn't give my kids a $50K car for graduation, largely because I feel like it creates a situation where the next car will need to be nicer/better thus they'll be wanting a $70-90K when they're not even 30. I feel like you need to put in the time and effort to get the high-end stuff and you can't get it from the start. Just like a job, you work your way up to a nice car, house, etc.
