I picked up a 2023 R8 and a 2023 S8 on the same day last year.

After my F90 M5 lease ran out, BMW didn't have any cars that interested me.
It was the first time in more than 20 years that I couldn't find a BMW I would like to buy.

sad day for M enthusiasts
Except the i5 has the same steering wheel.

You should apply for BMW, if you think the weight is what impacts the sales. This still has the V8.

Interesting in the UK, they force you to take Carbon Ceramic Brakes in the only Package option they offer. Weird.

Wow, looks like no Premium Sound System option either. The 655 watt system of the B&W is nowhere near as elite as the previous Diamond Surround System in the F90 or the 1,200 watt B&O System in the F10 M5. This is blow to audiophiles. Maybe the G60/G90 chassis just isn't up to par for interior sound design? Shame.

Also, from the looks of it, not listed in the Standard Equipment or as an option, no Soft Close Doors, and no Massaging Seats. WTF?

It's fine if the car is going to be 1,000lbs heavier than the previous F90 M5, but at least give us some premium comfort and luxury features that you just can't get in a car like a Tesla for example.

I'm guessing the USA Market will follow the same suit, no Soft Close Doors, no Premium Sound Upgrade, no Massaging Seats, no Full Leather option. All things that made the M5 stand apart from the competition. What is going on over at BMW these days?

Also, it's funny that the UK configurator has the steering wheel on the proper side (left) instead of the right side. Lol!
I thought I was one of the few people who cared, but it is pretty frustrating. I was hoping at least the m5 would get a better sound system optional along with massage seats…by no dice.

The m5 has always been sport wrapped in luxury. Even the e60 could get all of the above. And that’s what makes this worse. It’s a step back in certain ways that the f10 -> f90 was certainly not.

Nah, over 75% of BMW's are leased. Leases will end and people will just get the next new shiny thing. Even though it is slower.

BMW makes a great SUV, but apart from the M3/4 and M8 it’s slim pickings.

This speaks to me. I've always looked at the new model and got hyped up. I've owned BMW's since early 2012 when I first started getting into cars. Loved them since day and since then always looked for the next big thing BMW as coming out with. This one is a downgrade in almost every aspect. Losing features, gaining weight, gaining complexity for the sake of modernity and emissions NOT to improve performance. Already shown to be slower than the previous gen, gaining no meaningful upgrade besides the e-motor which depending on how aftermarket goes I can imagine BMW has encrypted all the communication between the hybrid modules and the rest of the car. So tuning will be more or less the same as the LCI as in throw on a piggy back to bring the downrated S63 back to life if those even exist for the S68 yet, tuning will be out of the question for a while. Especially if BMW has more encryption in place now. ID8.5 is locked down severely for coding I've read. The performance benefits they had to add was forced based off the added weight ie: stiffened chassis, bigger brakes, wider tires. S68 was designed for 2021 emission standards, so the hybrid system was forced, the weight was forced all for the name of making the M5 emissions friendly... those 29 miles of EV range will help european folks i'm sure, in the US 29 miles is not a lot of range for anything besides a ev bike. Plus I thought about it, once you go into EV only mode right, does the engine actually run to warm up? Otherwise when you request full power and the cold V8 turns on, does it just WOT the car cold to give you what you need? I'd love to see the technical guide on teh changes, read it's bolt-for-bolt different from S63, new crank, oil pump, coolant system, etc. Feels like the Frankenstein chassis with a Frankenstein powertrain is quite the match made in heaven.

I didn't even touch on the appearance at all, as that has left me polarized as I expect BMW rooted for that response. That's what there M line up is now, polarizing and far too diverse, so diverse it's left the core design in pieces sprinkled about on each model to hype up nostalgia for older models. Some pointed out the side profile (specifically the front end) looks a lot like an E60, and one shot that a reviewer did with a quick side shot glimpse showed that as well. So that was cool, but doesn't really bring the whole vehicle out of the other negatives things.

I am excited for the suspension and rear steer. Magnetic suspension should in theory be very nice. Hopefully BMW learned with the F90, not every M car has to be as hard core as a race car. Ultimate driving machine derives not just from how well it drives, but how well it rides.

This is probably a dumb question, but I was under the assumption hybrid cars do not need their batteries recharged; they auto-recharge.

It looks like the M5 will need the electric battery to be charged. Does that mean you have to take it to the gas station and then to the electric station?

I had a similar build on my f10 m5 with ccb. Don’t worry about the downvotes, those haters don’t pay your bills.

M5 Competition was my aspirational near future car, will have to wait for 8 years now to see what happens in next gen. I may buy a boat before that.

What a lovely trajectory BMW, you never fail to disappoint these days.

S8 curb weight 5125 lbs. and you get a full size sedan with huge trunk and back seat. Still has V8 engine, all the technological goodies, and it costs less.
