This thread is excellent and touches on EXACTLY the reason I purchased a 135i over a 128i or any other car. My 2004 Mazda 3 Hatchback is a superb car for it's class, beating every other car in it's class for 2004, 2005, and 2006. Only in 2007 and 2008 have other vehicles trumped it in the annual "best of" lists that car mags and reviewers put together every year. That said, I have constantly sought better performance from my car, adding suspension components, better tires, and helped it breath better. I got to the point where I was considering a very nice $4000 turbo kit that would take it towards 300hp. But what it really boiled down to was the fact that to put the kind of power on the ground in the way I would appreciate it would require a $1400 LSD kit and an upgraded clutch. I was demanding more from the platform than it could economically support. End game was that I remembered the words of a wise man. "If you want to build a fast car, start with a fast car." At that point I realized I was in the market for a sports coupe.

FWD Honda is not going to be nearly as fun to play with even if it can keep up with, or even slighly outrun an auto 128i in 1/4 mi.
But really, that's comparing the fastest stock Civic sold in North America to the slowest 1-series. I had a K24 motor w/6mt combo in my 06 TSX and it was hardly a potent drivetrain. Adequately powered at best. The Si has the K20... |

I think that a lot of 1er owners will come from other brands. Ive been done with Honda's and so for a few years. Got tired of spending major bucks for catback's,cai, cam gear and other stuff that would add on and not give me that major hp boost. Since then Ive bought Euros and the 1er is just a continuation of what ive been doing for the past few years. As for turbo I welcome that technology(had it in previous Audi) with the price of the gas well see some more in the future. These 300hp+ gt2871rs 1.8t were fun until something blows so a 3.0TT was a nice step up(better base).

hmm very interesting thread hijack.
civic SI vs 128i dollar for dollar i would take the civic i think. drop a turbo kit in the SI and now your talking anyway...a fully modded SI (not a 10 sec fast and furious version) couldnt carry the 135's jock. |
