It does still drive well, it is still fun, and its surprisingly comfortable, relaxing and engaging when you want it to be.

Just not a fan of the handling and some of the weight parts of the equation but still an awesome car.

To me its best described as standing between the M5 F90 and M760Li G11. And in that regards its awesome
M760li has zero handling, I have driven it side by side and not sure why people are quoting t f90c and excellent handling car, it wasn’t either. So I don’t think it’s in the middle.. I believe it’s closer to f90 maybe even the same..

I got the chance to spend a weekend with the new M5 so obviously I was going to jump at the opportunity, even though BMW-Sphygmomanometer relations are at a (temporary?) low.

Friday morning I went to pick it up and there it stood, in all its Isle-of-Man-Green glory, ready to be taken away for the weekend. Is it handsome? Let me put it like this: There certainly have been more offensive takes on M-cars over the past few years so it could have been worse. Is it classically handsome, as the F90 was? Definite no.

For the first time we're getting flared wheel arches on the M5 which leads to a similar rear door setup as on the M3 which I don't mind. What I do find a bit weird though is that not only has the M5 (just as the M2) lost its gills but the creases that went through the door handles and neatly culminated in said gills have moved upwards which results in big undisturbed (read: boring) door surfaces.

Other than that I'm ok with it. The Hofmeister Kink is fine, the preposterous faux-diffuser is fine. Oh, and I'm sort of over IOMG at this point.

I open the door to get in and—oh, dear!—shallow footwell! So what, you may think? That's usually a sign of big battery pack under the floor the consequence of which is that you sit high up. And it turns out, you do sit high up. I'm happy to report though that the seating position still works, [...]
It's amazing, thanks for sharing.

I know it's a (rather dreaded) cliché but without driving it back-to-back with an F90 it would be difficult to qualify the impact on handling. I stand by my verdict, though: If you've got any one of the previous ones, there's no need to upgrade. If you want a new warp-speed-capable saloon that still does the bendy bits, this is it.

I'd go M3 though. 😁

Pulls like a truck though, i give it that. 1000Nm is phenomenal and it does never feel slow.
On my 40min drive the battery did even charge up from recuperation. No issue with it getting empty quickly and loosing 300hp.
I feel you. It took me a bit of time and driving to find the M5 in there, but I'd also go G8x.

That is a difficult question as I'm not even sure what a typical M car is anymore. I grew up with the M-cars of the “Hochdrehzahlkonzept”-times with truly mesmeric engines. Those are gone for good.

I haven't been very deeply involved with the turbo-era M-cars, other than an F87 M2 Competition, but the overall sentiment is that they're still very much M-cars.

If we agree that superb handling is one of the remaining defining qualities of an M-car, then I'd say that the G90 M5 is very much an M5—as compromised as it is.

Pulitzer worthy review. Thank you for sharing the details about geography and how the M5 navigated through the alpine uos and downs with confidence.

Kebabs in St. Moritz. Doesn’t get any better.

F90C not an excellent handling car? Its an exec sedan, not a 911, and it will give a run for its money on many lower trim 911s and sport cars in handling.

M760Li 0 handling? Its a massive, heavy luxury barge that drives extremely well for what it is.

And the G90 M5 the same as the F90? Not a single person stood behind that, every review puts it behind.

Everyone is entitled to an opinion but this just doesn't add up.

I drove the G90 M5 for over 1000km.

Its a fabulous car, but it takes time to learn and appreciate it for what it is. As a F90 C owner in Brazil, at first I was impressed with the comfort and instant power and disappointed with pretty much everything else, but I came to learn and understand the car, and in the end its a new take on the M5. Less performance oriented, more comfort based (The F10 was a similar step in that direction). With that in mind, its an awesome car.

LOVED the read! I just visit Switzerland mid Decemeber for Christmas and it gave me all the warm and fuzzies thinking about how special that country is. Thanks for putting so much time into it. Wish I had my M2 with me!

Thanks, mate. The G90 was a guest though, and is gone already.
