Do a search on YouTube for i4 hard wire radar. Someone had a really good step by step video. It was the same in my 7 series and I believe just about all BMWS have the same above mirror plastic parts now as our X7 has it, too….

Edit: it’s this one….

hard wire

That is laser. That is the reticle and display for the LaserTech TruSpeed guns.

Here is a video of one in action:

Well that was fun , be careful prying open the bottom , the clips are fragile. If you break one and want to replace the parts “plastic shovel”not that expensive from what I am told.

Is the Escort cylinder above the radar detector a dash cam? If so, what's the model number?

Yes that’s a dash cam that pairs with the passport escort radar detectors. The model number is M200 and the radar detector is a passport escort max 360c. There also is a model with a built in dash cam called the maxcam360. I have both but I use the maxcam360 in my daily.

Be careful with wire routing up the pillars etc - do not forget that the air bags deploy through some of the trim. You do not want wires over your air bags!

yes I also have the live Cam option \ driver recorder that is built in the car, the main benefit of this method is that the only wire run is a 2-foot cable directly to the rearview mirror harness. No holes, no running through the pillars, etc..

If you’re ever running a cable along the same route as a curtain bag, just cable-tie the cable securely above the bag. It won’t interfere with bag-deployment that way.

Yes & No.

Drive recorder only stores video if:

1. Specific conditions are met i.e you smack the car into a schoolbus

2. You have the presence of mind to press & hold the parking sensor button for 5secs to manually trigger a 40sec recording incl. video preceding the point of trigger

By comparison, a standard dashcam
records continuously.

Notes:

G90 records 5 cameras: Front, rear, sides & interior

Dashcams are prone to failire due to thermal cycling

That video shows a standard laser speed meter in action.
Likely tripod-mounted or held to Officer’s face.
In my example, our understanding is that the unmarked Golf GTI has an onboard speed meter.
I’m keen to find out if that system is radar or laser-based.
Radar is easy to detect.
If it’s laser… we got problems here.

I would have thought operating laser from moving police car would be very challenging.

I’m positive that is a LaserTech system. Maybe it was vehicle mounted, but the reticle and icons are from LaserTech.

Does your BMW wall clock light up? If so, you're supposed to turn it on when you are working on your car......brings good luck!

LaserTech, DragonEye… whichever, they all end in tickets! 🤣
However, cops cruising around and sniping drivers with laser while the patrol car itself is moving is a worrying development.

Are you all allowed to have laser jammers in Ireland? A custom installed laser jammer is really your only option against laser. If the “laser” warning on a radar detector goes off then it is already too late.
