Doesn't it depend on what the rest of the waiting room looks like? Or are you going to base everyting off of the floor? I like bamboo flooring if you can afford it, but I also agree it's all about the seating and if you have WIFI. Just sayin'

the difference is in the surroundings. those floors are perfect for that building, and specifically that part of the building.

a waiting room needs to be cozy, making carpeting the ideal type of flooring.

Alright, and here's full disclosure since carpet has obviously won without details. It's for a performance shop, the shop itself is epoxied, but the waiting room is up for grabs (separate room from the shop obviously). Assume the carpet will stay clean.

Also carpet cheap, epoxy not.

Well, Thanks MS. D FoxyONE for the reminder. I totally forgot about this thread. And I am still waiting to hear back from my flooring contractors what an "ego friendly" floor is? Perhaps, something that bitch, Paris Hilton has installed in her digs

Seriously though (The professional in me is coming out now ...Watch out!), the type of waiting has a DIRECT and TANGIBLE relation to the any type of environment/ ambiance you are trying to create. It's one thing to wait in a room to hear from the doctor the result of your wife delivering your first born in the next room. It's totally another thing to wait in a room until the gas chamber is ready for your arrival. So you have to be specific. However, based on choices cited here this is a general take on each :

Wood : Warm, natural and hospitable/ Hard surface not good acoustically unless mixed with other sound absorbing finishes, materials or plush furnishing. fairly easy to keep clean but needs regular maintenance (waxing a nd mopping)

Carpet : Homey and warm. The best option for walking bare foot all the time. Esay to stain, harder to keep clean and the least hygienic option.

Epoxy/ stained concrete floor : Cold and hard. Industrial/ commercial feel. Least homey. More suited for lofts and studios (for young and unmarried). Easy to keep clean (only need a ShopVac and occasional light mopping)

So if you give me more specific information on the room, I can give you more hints/ suggestions. And Miss D is right : Go "Eco-friendly" if you can afford it and your choice should be in sync and close consideration of other finishes on the room, the furnishings, traffic/ flow and use of the space.

Ever thought about polished concrete?
Cheap, doesn't really get dirty, durable, easy to refinish.
Goes well with performance shop.
Epoxy and carpet need to be mopped or vacummed everyday but it only needs simple sweep or nothing.

If I were you, I would pour concrete, let it settle for a bit and roll some tires to leave a tire mark to your garage or something and polish the floor except the tire marks.

Solid vinyl flooring or industrial epoxy cheap to clean, carpet not. Steam clean every month?

Go to a flooring shop, look at designs. Mono-color carpet would look horrible - solid color epoxy (even with flecks) would look bad too.

Search google images for commercial flooring. The decision isn't carpet vs. epoxy.

You'll probably end up with an industrial, heavy-traffic type 'short' carpet, with a cool design, that can stand up to traffic and that cleans easily. You wouldn't use any carpet that you'd see in a house.

Who are your clients? Age, income, etc... those are your real deciding factors.

If your clients are civic owners etc.. then you're better off with epoxy. If you're servicing $60 to $100k cars, you'll need carpet, but you'll spend upwards of $3 - $3.50 per sq ft, installed for something that will look good for 3 - 5 years in that environment.
