Well, I just wanted to follow up after having just seen the movie.
I thought the movie was terrific. ...and it is a tough sell, so I will not try and do so. I work with all Rebulicans and I know better than to convince them to see this movie or even that global warming could be man-made. I will say that if you are on the fence (i.e., not sure) about the subject, then there is hope. In the words of Roger Ebert, "...you owe it to yourself to go see this movie." It may be the most important movie of our lifetime. We will be test driving hybrids (and a Fit or two) shorty. That is all... now I will go get laid...

Global warming
I think I share the view of many conservatives and middle of the road people who believe that global warming is a real phenomenon, though probably either overstated or based on data that has been taken to be gospel truth and isn't as clear as it seemed to be. I have no idea what movie you're talking about...though I did see "The Day After Tomorrow" when it came on TV. I wouldn't necessarily "not see" a movie just because I disagreed with the premise.
Generally, I take a probabilistic view of the world and its affairs. I think the odds are in favor of global warming being real, and that it is likely that we industrialized nations are contributors. Given the dangers, I think that moving away from dependence on fossil fuels should be a long term goal, with conservation being a short term goal. It certainly is convenient that we developed countries got to go through our industrial revolution and now we can sit back and criticize developing countries around the world for pollution and environmental hazards as well as issues like child labor. I thought that there was an excellent chance of WMD in Iraq. Apparently I was wrong, but given what I thought were the odds and the dangers, I felt at the time that we were justified. I truly believed Colin Powell's evidence. |
