rice university in houston is well regarded. i think berkeley would be a good choice as well (but i might be biased).
barring that, UT Austin, or Texas A&M are fine as well (as long as he doesnt mind tx).

Yeah, I wanted to go there so bad. But, when my parents explained to me that 160k in debt in not fiscally possible/responsible. I shed a tear and went to community college. FML

Honestly he needs to go to a school that caters well to undergraduates, do as well as he can, then top MBA programs will be within reach. A lot of the top business schools are ranked in the top because of their MBA program's reputation, not their undergraduate program.

They're wrong. I came out of school with 160K in debt and I'm driving an E90. Doctors typically come out of school with 200K+ in debt. You think there is something fiscally irresponsible about being a doctor?

but if you go to a private school in southern cali for a liberal arts degree for 160K when you could go to another school down the street for the same degree, same "degree value", for 30K, then that's not necessarily being smart about "bang" for your educational buck. Someone said this, and it was kind of the route I went, I went to a state school at first for engineering and then transferred the second year to the well known Engineering school (Drexel) due its co-op program. He might want to consider this option since it does help pay the bills and come out of school with experience and connection in the working world.
I held off for a number of years then got my company to pay for me to go to Wharton for my Business Degree. They paid the majority of the bill. Here is some other advice, I recruited students for my colleges as an alumni, and here is what the schools told me, do not discourage anyone from applying because they are not straight A's or perfect SAT score or they think they are not good enough. Yes top school look for those students, however they also look to diversify the student body as much as they can. That student might have something the school might find appealing and want in the school. Also, the people who decide who can come do not have access to the finanicals so they have no idea whether someone can afford a school. If a school wants a student they will help them find the money. So he should apply to school he knows he can get in, and pick a few that could be a reach and get it a try. If they really want to go there set up a campus interview, this can help. BTW, Drexel has a good business school and requires you to co-op as well so he can get real world experience while learning. |

I graduated from a small engineering school. At the same time one of my professors (PhD) quit teaching and started working at the same place.
My professor had worked at other "big name universities" while getting his PhD. I was curious how my smaller school stacked up against the big guns so I asked him. He said: " there are smart rats and dumb rats. We put the rats through hard mazes and easy mazes. When the smart rats come out of the different mazes, they are still smart. When the dumb rats come out of the different mazes, they are still dumb." How much smarter can "the Harvards" make a person...does the IQ go up just by going there? On the other side of the coin, how many doors will a lowly ranked school open (and how big are those doors). I suspect "the Harvards" have a lot more impact for opening the big doors. The next issue is cost and that varies greatly from state to state (and there are low cost colleges still). But the most important issue to consider when choosing a college is their football team. After all, when you do get out into the work place, you don't want people telling you how great their life is because their team beat yours by 82 points last week. |
