I do it too occasionally. It's not poor nutrition, just happens to be after the shower when my nails are softer than normal. Generally only do it if I don't have clippers around, but you can use your other nails to make a break in the nail and then just peel it off. Think I learned it from watching my father as a kid.
I have very good hygeine fwiw.
