You are most probably right - I looked both o 2002 and 1600 up and they look very similar. How can you tell the difference?

It's actually a well known trivial fact that C&D raved about the 1600-2 (1600 coupe, also known as 1602) in 1967. That article put BMW on the map in America. But for those who didn't know that, the grill and the fact that it was tested in Feb 1967 are the tell-tale signs - the 2002 was not introduced until a year later in 1968, same year BMW CCA was founded.
