ok well I'm a visual learner and when I see shots posted in say an architecture themed contest, I look at what themes/concepts are prevalent and try to emulate them with my own style/twist. When I need to shoot something in the dark, I learn how to properly light it with a flash. When I need to submit a photo like a long exposure inside a moving car or something like that... I'm learning and gaining more and more experience behind the camera by trying them.

I think for the most part (which is just saying most people, not everyone) have to travel a step or two out of their comfort zone of what they've done before to do a lot of these themes which is where most learning and experience is gained.

If these contests are challenging you AT ALL then my questions for you are 1. Why haven't you been consistently winning all of them and 2. Why haven't you suggested anything more challenging? If you can't give a good reason for either of those then maybe you're not trying hard enough to put your best work possible out there.

I'm not trying to sound high and mighty about it, hell I know I still have lots of learning to do and I've shot professionally for 2 years for pay. I'm just saying maybe your idea of the contests or the seriousness of which you partake in them isn't as high as it should be to get something out of them.

I know everyone isn't gonna submit something brand new every contest... I was busy last month and posted an older image myself (though I re-edited it). But if you're not shooting a new image every 2-3 contests then you're either too good of a photog and should be dominating or your not trying hard enough.

Just my .$02... good luck on this one everyone. I'll be sure to vote for any that don't contain any children.

Isn't the voting very subjective? What he might consider not challenging and a great picture voters might not like. I think most people agree that the Mona Lisa is a masterpiece, but I bet there are plenty of people who don't like it.

Here's my submission. I have better photos but they are all beach shots, and I figured I'd submit something different than everyone else. It actually looked like that too, only used Photoshop to add the border and words.

I think it's nice that you take these contests seriously and are trying to learn from them. However, not everyone feels the same way you do.

To answer your questions (even though I never said that these contests were too easier and that I should win every single one of them ):

1. I don't care enough to actually go out and try to shoot a new photo every time. I have other responsibilities that are far more important than to go out and shoot pictures for a contest that has no significance (I don't mean to belittle them because they're fun - I'm just saying).

2. I have suggested things in the past but realized that it's up to the winner to decide so I should I waste my time coming up with a theme and suggesting it? It kinda ties in with "I simply don't care enough to spend too much time on it".

Okay back to picture posting...

Yeah I don't get those kind of paintings. Like some Picasso pictures look like they were painted by 5 year olds yet they go for millions of dollar$. Then again I'm not the artsy type.

BTW nice submission!

Well that answers the questions and so you know I wasn't suggesting you called the contests"too easy" or anything but you said you didn't learn from them... so if you're not learning ANYTHING then you must know it all already/have a good amount of experience so they would just naturally come easy for you.

Basically all I'm saying is that just because you don't take them seriously doesn't mean others don't or shouldn't... and I don't think they should be taken TOO seriously cuz yes they are for fun but on some level should be respected as a tool to help sharpen peoples knowledge and skills in shooting new stuff. I always thought the learning element about photography/editing was an added perk to them. I think we should be trying new stuff that pushes the things that people shoot every day so that we all can feel like we're progressing as photogs... even if it's just a hobby.

Lots of nice submissions already! Maybe we shouldn't have 3 weeks for this contest? At this rate we may have 50 pics to choose from, not that that's bad...

nice dude.

I've been having strange dreams since I saw Inception last week and last night I was dreaming that I was in some old classy hotel in downtown Chicago and was looking out the window and saw a picturesque sunset out of the window of my room and ran to take a photo of it but couldn't get my camera out of my bag in time and the sun went down.
