Don't get me wrong -- I have nothing against filters, but I hope you don't think a filter will save your lens from "breaking." A lens hood does very well at protecting the front element, too. To each his own, sure, but I just don't think you really know what you're talking about

You should look into CPS if you're worried about breaking and replacements

Yeah, insurance is the way to go if you're worried about breaking your equipment.

CPS (Canon Professional Services) isn't insurance. If you're a Canon shooter, you should look into it as well! It's a free service (cleaning, repairs, etc - SILVER members) for professional Canon photographers.

Dude, I don't expect a filter to keep the lens safe from anything other that dust/foreign objects hitting the front glass. Not like dropping it or anything. I had a kit lens that I didn't filter and the outer element got scratched so it was junk after that.

Thanks for the tips though

I figure for my day to day activities i think its good to have the filter/protector on. if i'm taking photos of my family or an important event and i want the best of of the camera, i take the covers off and let it be naked.

Day to day though, all the L series lenses i own with a filter on them still blow my mind for the quality they give off. And considering the last wedding i was at, the camera being used was a Canon XS with a mid level lens by the wedding photographer, I figure I can't be doing badly with the filter on.

I also take them off when there's lots of lights giving the potential for the filter to cause an extra unneeded lens flare.

I fucking hate when this happens and I look at the people getting married like "Really? This is the schmuck you hired for $1000?". I'd have done it for free.

I ended up printing about 10 photos and putting them in a frame for them. They were pretty happy.

Sadly i've seen a lot of the photos that were taken by the photographer too, not too much worth keeping in the lot. Pretty unfortunate considering it's a day that a lot of people would like to document.

yeah i usually give framed photos as gifts too... 90% of the people I've given them to say they like the stuff more than the shit they paid for (and not because my stuff is uber good, just because I care so I spend time on it). One photog at my best friends wedding (I was best man) was shooting with a rebel xt and i got passed around a book about 10pm that night of all the final photos... she went and printed um out at costco that night... no post processing or anything. I slapped my buddy in the face and say way to go douche.

this is one of the things i dislike about the digital age of photography, it's made it easier for anyone to pick up the equipment and pose.

I don't think i have the ability to wedding photograph yet, but i know i can take better pictures then a lot of these people stealing money from others who they have convinced they are professionals.

Oh well, can't stop people from trying to save a buck or two.

actually, you'd be surprised. planning my own wedding currently it seems that most people don't want the traditional posing and all of that stuff anymore but more of a photojournalistic approach to it. Not saying they don't want posed stuff at all but more natural posing as opposed to some glamour shots looking stuff.

if you are technically sound and can show some creativity in your shots and take some grouped photos and some shots of the couple, you could easily charge $1000-1200 per wedding and get some good referrals. I've debated doing it for easy cash on several occasions but i just don't have the time available to make it consistent enough to be able to build up a small portfolio and make it worth while.

sorry, i worded myself poorly, I meant "poser"

i find there are a lot of posers out there that will pick up the cheapest equipment they can and (like you said) go to costco to print the shots with no post processing.

I know what you're saying about the "journalistic" style of photography, I've seen/done lots of running towards cameras dressed in a suit. and seen lots of flying kicks and such.

Best is to have a nice combo.

I wouldn't mind teaming up with a proper wedding photographer to help out and be support just so i can learn more and gain experience. I think it would be pretty fun.
