An Evo is a smaller sedan with a turbo engine with half a liter of displacement per cylinder and 289HP that goes for around $35k. An e90 335i is a smaller sedan with a turbo engine with half a liter of displacement per cylinder and 300 HP that goes for around $40k. I would say they are some what similar.
They are but they are not .... it seems to me that a lot of Evo owners that loved their evos but need something more "mature" find the 335i a great replacement as you still get a lot of fun from the 335i that you do with the Evo but you get more refinement and class.

If your comparing perf to perf hands down the evo wins .. perf per dollar there really isnt anything that can touch the evo ... even the STI is close but over 350whp and the STI's 2.5L has problems.

Thats exactly it ... some of us are getting older or getting different jobs or some other situation that makes the Evo impractical for us. The 335i solves that problem.

For me it was getting out of 4 year relationship with my ex GF. Try explaining a Evo with full bucket seats, a roll bar, and a loud ti exhaust to a gril that your taking out on a date for the first time. Or try going out to the club and meeting a girl and trying to take her home in that car ...LOL

When I had the Evo I made my friends drive as the Evo was too much of a cop magnet and I never wanted to drive it after even drinking one beer (dont need a stupid DUI ... you know the times when your fine to drive yet there is a chance you could blow over the legal limit)

Yeah I know they have their differences. They are certainly very different cars in many ways. I'm just saying people should stop answering these kind of threads with "don't compare these cars they are too different." I know they are different because I have driven both of them extensively. Why have I driven both of them extensively? Because I was cross shopping them, and many other people have done the same. You don't seem to get these kind of responses for threads comparing an SUV to an e90. For some reason there are just people who don't like the Evo e90 comparison.

From what I've observed from the people who get offended is that they are naive to what raw power & handling capabilities the Evo insues...People seem to just assume because it was in "Fast & The Furious" & because it has a big wing that it's some piece of shit ricer when it's just not the case...

IMHO dollar for dollar the Evo is the best car you can buy on the market today that makes you WANT to drive your car everyday...

+1 The only other car that even comes close in this price range is the STI which I think might win when the new ones come out. The Evo RS is an incredible deal. I would go as far as to say it is the best car for the money ever made.

They are more similar after a while than many realize. Many people who own Evos got ripped off and paid 35k+ for their cars. There is no leasing on the Evo, so those guys all actually have some money to throw around on a decently pricey machine.

I daily drove my Evo for 4 years. Best car I've ever owned to date. Never had a SINGLE issue with it and I gave it hell. I even still have the stock clutch in it still with 69k and the 35R on there since 40k!

Anyway, I basically was used to all that power in the Evo and wanted something FI, powerful, quiet, with cruise and a more mature ambiance to drive around in. The BMW was about the only thing that fit that.

Suprised I didn't see this thread, spose you can add me too.

"Frenchy4g63" over on EvoM.

Little back story, bought an VIII when they were new, modded it, built 2.0L, 35r, cams, etc. etc. etc. 612whp on straight c16. Sold it for the IX SE to get all the good stuff without all the crap. Never touched it mod wise, I put together a mod list as I was just gonna do everything all at once to save some down time and money. List got longer and longer, and wouldn't have seen much time on the street, so I was looking for a suitable DD. Saw an E92 335i in person and fell in love, and while looking at small mods starting seeing the awesome number's people were making with it. So I decided I should pick one or the other, since I already did an Evo, I decided on the Bimmer. I always loved BMW's but thought the non M models were always underpowered, the 335i changed all that for me.

Now it's just the waiting that sucks.. Although the 2.2L 4cyl monster under the hood of my 97' Camry makes the waiting a little easier, I know this isn't going to be easy.

We have almost the EXACT same story...I had an 03 VIII & bought a IX SE & soon realized I wanted somethign different with the same amount of potential...

Cadillac Johnson,

I added you to the list. I will start another list for the STI's as well since they are a very similar performance car.

not to hijack the thread, but I would be interested in Evo/STI owners' thoughts on why they went with the 335i over the e46 M3 (as if this topic hasnt been discussed already :P). I know the E46 is still stiffer than an E92, but it seems like anything is a step towards comfort coming from a rally rocket.

The turbo motor on the 335i is what sold me on the car over the E46 M3

M3 nailed it. Most of us are boost junkies, and probly pretty familiar with the potential of factory turbo cars. The 2JZ (Supra) and RB26 (Gt-R) are probly the most well known twin turbo inline 6's ever made, and both those motors are legendary.

Honestly if the 335i had an NA 3.0L inline 6, I wouldn't have looked twice at it. It's still a great looking car, but turbo motors make my penis swell.

Interesting... I couldn't really let me Evo go.

I traded (will trade) my DSM (99 GSX) for a 328xi coupe. I really liked the 335, and I thought about trading both of my cars to make a 335 work. There's just something about having two cars and I really couldn't bring myself to having only one. Plus, there wasn't a 335xi coupe yet and I really like the AWD for the crazy Pittsburgh weather.

I hope I'm not losing out on performance by going from the GSX to the 328xi. It seemed to have a decent kick when I test drove a 328xi sedan, but without the turbo kicking in at the higher RPM's, I worry I'll miss that extra boost. But the 328xi should be a good daily driver (in all weather conditions) and still have comparable power.

I did notice quite a bit of talk about 335's over on EvolutionM. And I thought about doing the trade myself, so I can't blame any of you. There were just a few things that didn't seem right to replace my Evo with a 335. If the Evo were my daily driver, I probably would have done the trade.
