What an idiotic and insensitive thing to say.

Did I miss the breakthrough anti-hurricane technology that hurricane-proofs your house? How exactly do you expect these people to prepare for a Katrina-level hurricane? There is very little you can do to protect yourself from a hurricane of that magnitude, other than to evacuate or move away. Most of these people live in or near poverty so they just don't have the means to do any of this.

Wow, truly an ignorant comment...

Do you have any idea what it is like to live at or near poverty?

For most of my childhood, I lived in an inner-city project, affordable housing (AKA ghetto). My parents both made minimum wage. In my neighborhood, at least one teen would be shot/killed every summer due to intentional or unintentional drive-by shootings. The front of my house was riddled with bullet holes. When coming home at night, I have had bullets whizzing over my head a few times. My entire family has witnessed teens getting shot through our window right in front of my house. Gunshots are so routine that no one even bothers to call the police anymore.

Anyway, due to our limited income at the time, it wasn't even an option for us to move 10 blocks away to a safer neighborhood in the same town. So you really think that it is feasible for entire families from an entire city, just pack up and move cross country?

Plus, moving to Detroit might be safer from hurricanes but it probably won't be any better economically.

That's fine if you want to use your tax dollars to bail out them again, but I won't have one penny of my tax money go to them one more time. Live and learn is my motto. Not live and fail, and repeat again.

The main reason Katrina was a catastrophe was because the levees broke and a major portions of the city got flooded because it rests below sea level. My point was that there are ways to prevent them from breaching again. I'm not speaking as somebody who accepts heir fate and defers everything off as an act of God. I'm speaking as an experienced engineer and somebody who knows fortifying that city isn't rocket science. It takes determination and a lot of hard work. Sure, I wrote what I did tongue in cheek, but the truth is they have had seven years to learn from their mistakes. When I say "they" I'm talking about city officials and army corps of engineers. I don't necessarily hold the individual citizens responsible.

Based on this little diatribe you wrote, what have YOU done to assist in making sure they are protected? Since you're an experienced engineer and all, you surely have a vast knowledge base to help improve the levee system instead of just making rude comments, wishing for a city to be flattened and people to lose their lives.

Seriously I don't get it, if you don't have anything nice to say just get out of the thread and don't bother posting.

Either way, I hope those in the path of the storm are safe or find way to safety.

Coming into a thread where someone is worried about their home, belongings, and life saying, "If they didn't learn their lesson I hope the city is destroyed," is a bit much.

And you're not really neutral at all. You made the same ignorant and rude comment.

no, i don't recall making the same ignorant and rude comment. i stated that i dont feel bad for people who CHOOSE (its a free country, poor or not) to live in such a disaster prone area.

and he stated that their wasn't referring to the people who live there.

I'm sorry, backpedaling after the fact doesn't make what you said any less rude.

Aside from feeling old now, I can't imagine going through such a crazy awful experience. Did you ride out the storm in your house or in a shelter? I feel fortunate that I really only have to worry about blizzards in my part of the country. For everyone down there, stay safe!

i wasn't trying to be rude, just saying that i dont feel bad for people who still CHOOSE to live there. theres a difference between choosing to live there and living there.

Sara,

It is not a Katrina storm and you guys are much better prepared than '05. Just be smart, have a plan and you will be fine.

Best of luck to all you guys on the gulf coast.

Lol, so the location where you currently reside is based solely on the risk of natural disasters? I guess you must live in Hawaii then. According to How the States got their Shapes, that is the safest state to live in to avoid natural disasters. So job, education, housing, etc had nothing to do with your decision to live there? Or the fact that perhaps you were born there and all your friends and family are there?

My life story was just to illustrate a point, which is not everyone has the means to live in a location where it is safe, whether it be gang violence or natural disasters. It must be awesome for you to pack up and leave when you want but most of the Katrina victims did not and still don't have that option. Many of these people were born and raise there, they did not choose to live there and they don't have the option to leave.
