No you dont need it but, most newer model tvs have the apps built in already. Its not like you can ask them to take it off. I bought my samsung and vizio when the "smart" feature was fairly new. Now you can buy a standalone unit for 50 bucks or they come loaded on your blu ray player, ps4 or xbox. sams club had a 2 hour sale that had a 70 inch Vizio smart tv for under $1000.

I dont care either way. If the TV I want has it fine, if it doesnt fine. I have 2 LGs with smarttv and I do use it all the time. However like many have mentioned if it didnt have it you could add the functionality and much more with a roku, apple tv, console, bluray etc.

TVs are a display only. Period. Buy a roku or Apple TV that you can upgrade for $99 whenever you want. You'll end up dong that in a year anyways once the smart tv apps you paid big for are outdated and not updated by the manufacturer.
I own a Samsung Smart TV and wish I had bought with the mindset above. Want a Roku 3. |

I still think DLP has the best picture when properly calibrated. I have an 82" Mitsu and it's ridiculously good for movies and gaming. Regular TV is great unless the signal is crap and compressed...82 inches doesn't hide flaws very well.

I just measured how far my couch is from my living room wall - 13ft.
i read the 75" Samsung has superior image quality over the 80" Sharp. from 13 feet away and coming from a 52", i think the Samsung 75" has jumped ahead of the Sharp 80". |

I don't disagree with you one bit. My DLP is still the main television in the house (living room). Have Samsung LCD's in every other room.

while on the topic...
Can we talk a little about how to get the best picture quality? - Obviously you have to control lightning in the room. - HDMI Cables - Physical Disc for movies over streaming as quality is compressed ( obvi blue-ray) for cable tv- use an HDMI to connect your cable box straight to the TV what about calibrating the tv? The one i got seems to be really good, out of the box...any suggestions? are there tutorials or some stuff online?

I got my Samsung 52" calibrated back in 2008 the day it got dropped off by the Geek Squad lol.
this new Samsung 75" that I want to get allegedly doesn't need any further calibrating outside of the internal calibration system built into the settings. I got all HDMI cables, a PS3 for Blu-Rays and an HD Dish Network box. everything was installed back in 2008 by the Geek Squad and I have yet to mess with anything. when I get my 75" Samsung, I don't think i'll need to do anything other than take the 52" out and install the 75" (and then mess with the calibrations). I soooooo want a wall mount this time though.... |

How do you like the Synology? I've been thinking of picking up a DS 412+.

the 75" Samsung TV went back up to $2999, so we're going to have to wait until it comes down to $2500 again or shop for a "better" TV at $2999..... no negoitiating because it was a "UPP" or "UMPD" product from Samsung, meaning SAMSUNG delegates how much Best Buy, Wal-Mart, Target, NewEgg, Office Depot and other big retailers sell their TV's for. there was no indication that the price of that TV was only for "black Friday", because it was priced at $2499 3 days before black Friday even started.... i was "this close" to buying it Tuesday night, even with the extra $500 that it had jumped. the price was $3680 after warranties, wall mounting, tax, etc. it wasn't a bad price, but we decided to pull away, take a breathe and regather our thoughts. again, if we're gonna pay @ $3700 for a TV (after taxes, warranties, wall mounting, etc), we at least want to ensure we're picking the best one..... so yeah, back to the ol drawing board. more reading on AVS and CNET HAHA !!!! |

Holy crap! What are they charging to mount it for you? It is really easy to DIY btw. I've installed several myself, the biggest was a 60" plasma... That bish was heavy too! I did a full motion wall mount, and then did some pull ups off the mount just for safe measure! Lol
Anyway good luck with your research. |

they are mounting, connecting all existing HDMI's/Connections to my existing Home Theater System, hiding wires and reprogramming my TV remote. they are also responsible for any sheet rock damage, the TV falling off or any other disasters that could happen while trying to mount a TV with the help of your 98lb wife HAHA !!!! it's insurance that we are more than willing to accept the cost of... the warranty was $379 as well - this includes more coverage than the manufacturer's warranty and also includes Geek Squad coming and pulling the TV for repair, then bringing it back and re-installing everything to how it was. also covers a Lemon Law if they can't fix whatever issue you're having after the 3rd visit. none of that bothers us, as we planned on getting it with the TV, it's just that we want to make sure that the Samsung 75" for $2999 is the best 75" TV at that price... when it was $2499 we believed it was the best 75" at that price, but now we have to re-evaluate based on the $500 increase.... |

the $500 increase over night kind of pissed us off. it was our fault for putting the TV in the cart and not actually buying it until Tuesday. when Tuesday came around, my wife checked in her cart and it was gone. she searched for it again on Best Buy's website and it had gone up, that's why they removed it from our cart. so then we went into the actual store to see what they could do, and since it was one of those "UMPD" deals, they couldn't negotiate on the price of the TV since Samsung is the one who drops the hammer and delegates how much BB needs to sell the TV for.... **sigh** #firstworldproblems |
