Quit hatein guys. Im sure a new STI is a great car. Just dont mod it too much or you will break it. Ask my buddy with broke motor mounts.
I hope u enjoy it!

Yep, I agree. Not that I want to be one of those "my brand is great and everything else sucks" guys either... but you are obviously young and put more emphasis on the perception of 'performance' and being able to put buzz can mufflers on your car. Subaru markets a car for you - BMW does not. I've owned two Subarus and don't have anything against them, so enjoy.

Is 44 young? ;-)

I hate bling and "buzz can mufflers."

I HATE the old STi with its gold wheels and huge wing. The 2008 STi is not so eggregiously obnoxious, but I could do without the over-flared wheel wells and hatch deck lip. The e91 335 would be ideal for me, but I cannot buy it here... I am ready for a smaller car than my current 540i touring, but want the cargo space for bikes, kids, etc...

What's a young guy with cargo to do? :-)

The trunk space is surprisingly good with an e90 plus you can fold the rear seats down if you get the cold weather package. The e90 sedan is much more utilitarian than one might think. There is plenty of room to haul around a couple of electric guitars (in cases) and fairly big amps. I do it all the time.

Sorry for the assumption that you were about 23 and spoiled (a demographic far too well represented around here). Sounds like horsepower is a major priority for you. Otherwise I would say the E91 328i (or xi as you prefer) would be ideal. Much more space than a small Subbie, but not the boat that a 5 Series touring is.

I think I'm looking for a "practical" mid-life crisis car. I was tempted to keep the 540it and also get a 911, but I have to pick up the kids from school, haul stuff for work occasionally, etc., and would love to find a car that meets both needs... Carry stuff and go fast. I have had sedans in the past (1998 M3, 2001 S4), but was disappointed with the ability to cram in a couple of bikes, even with seats down.

Did you consider the A3 3.2?

I have considered and driven the A3 3.2. I really like the layout and body, but with a loaded weight of almost 3900 lbs, the overhead of the AWD, and the somewhat antiquted 250hp 3.2 v6, the 0-60 time of close to 7 seconds is not as blistering as the 335i. After driving the 335i, I want at least that level of performance.

The Subie says it has a maximum of 44 CF of cargo room, where the E91 says 61 CF. That is a big difference, almost 50% more space in the E91. I can't find a number for the E90 with the rear seats folded, but even if it doubled the trunk capacity (12 CF), you'd only have 24 CF. That isn't very much.

A 5 series Touring on the other hand has 58 CF according to Edmunds (a 2007 model that is.) So the E91 actually has slightly more cargo space than the E61! Wow.

Anyway, if the Subie meets your needs, then I wish you luck. I personally don't like wagons too much, so it doesn't really matter who makes it, it isn't something I'd ever buy.

Definitely a bummer BMW doesn't bring them over. I wonder if the M touring cars will ever hit US shores. At least we're getting the M3 sedan this time around.

Good luck with the Sube.

with what i've read... i don't think you'll be keeping the STI for very long. Just my word of advice from a 19 year old still waiting to own an STI like car... it's not practical, your family won't like it because they'll break their backs riding with you, you don't sound like you'll be using it for what it was really built for (which is on a track or dirt path), and you sound like you had your heart set on a BMW.

i know you can't wait anymore, but there are many more cars out there suited to what you should like. good luck with finding a new car! hope you end up with the BMW

I don't blame the OP. He has every right to express his opinion in an open forum. In case you didn't know BMW NA does monitor boards such as this and an open dialogue regarding the needs for certain autos can spark changes. i.e. M5 6spd.
I for one would welcome a 335i wagon and would purchase one if it were available.

Just wondering, why exactly do you need a wagon? Or a hatch?

The trunk along with fold down seats and perhaps a roof rack is enough?

FWIW, The 08 WRX's are gross.

The STi rocks. Don't listen to the people on this forum who only think BMW makes good cars.

I'd take that JD power and Assoc. ranking with a grain of salt. That counts everything. So let's compare a wiper motor on a subaru to a HPFP on a BMW? Those ratings don't reflect the actual problems, just the fact that a problem occured. A BMW is going to be much more (WAAY) more expensive to maintain than a subaru.

Subaru's are very dependable cars. I'll stand by my statement, but hope for the best with my BMW.

I'm a fan of the new STI. But 40k? Wow!! I'd pickup a Mazdaspeed 3 for 23k and get a set of snows for the winter. It's not much slower than the STI once you're moving.

Not sure she would be too happy about the roof rack comment....
