The general driving population could care less.
All they know is that it's German, and that it's a BMW.
However, other BMW drivers will pull up behind you, and just laugh.

So, who are they trying to impress?

It's not a "50th Anniversary Badge", it's a classic Motorsport Roundel from the 1970s and some folks prefer it.

I've seen it on many different models long before BMW decided to bring it back as a factory option for M's 50th Anniversary on MY 2022 cars.

The first time I saw the badge was in the mid-90s on an E36 M3.

Which I think is perfectly fine if you prefer the Motorsport Roundel. The fact that it's not a 2022 MY is irrelevant, since that badge has been around for a long time.

Lol, no pictures but I have seen several late model base 3 and 4 series around my area with M badges. Always makes me chuckle a little. I have always been the opposite, whether driving an M or not I always de badge them.
I am thinking about getting a few Hybrid stickers to put on my fenders so I can get better gas milage.

I debadge my cars to the extent reasonably possible. The F90 M5 is a challenge since it has unique side grilles. I took the stickers off the grilles, but only the M5 has grilles in this location. My E36 is the most fun — people ask if it is an M3. It is, but it also has a fully built turbocharged motor.
