In our over-restricted state, one of the last things that has not been taken away from legitimate firearms owners by the anti-gun folks is the OPTION to not bring up the CCW subject unless asked by an officer. Some other states offer a similar *option* by not making it mandatory to inform unless asked. My chosen *option* is to inform (even in the 99.9% of the times when I'm NOT carrying), because I want to go home just as much as the officer does.....

....and it'll be YOUR (...speaking generally) fault. If you feel that the benefit(s) outweigh the risks, carry on. You might want to disclose this to your friends and acquaintances who fall into the, "I ain't disclosing shit to the cops!" camp. edit: I apologize if any of that came across harsh. My only intention is to help people understand what can/does happen, what cops are legally allowed to do (...a little less than we used to be able to do, but a TON more than most people realize), and to make the police contact/detention go as smoothly as possible for the pedestrian/motorist and the law enforcement official. |

First off thank you for being a first responder and thanks for being a genuine person. I like to travel to Cali alot. I always like to carry just to be safe. Whats the best way to bring my MK18 pistol rifle with me?

Thank you! It's usually thankless, but I enjoy every minute of it. The mission is my imperative. If I help just one person a day (....and take just one really bad person off of the street every day), I've done my job. If you don't live here and you don't have a CCW from California, please don't carry any firearms. You're going to end up behind bars really quick should you get caught with that firearm. We don't have reciprocation with any state in the union. |

I know my question is silly, but I'd figure to ask it anyway...
If you were to see a civvie drive a car that is commonly used for squad cars (Explorer, Charger, even a Crown Vic), would you be more inclined to assume they're a first responder or a PBA sticker on wheels and possibly give them more leniency if say... They are speeding, or are they more or less fair game like every other car on the road? I ask because for some us civvies, when we see the aforementioned vehicles, we do get a bit intimidated since we assume it's a LEO until we see that it's some soccer mom with kids in the back seat, dudebro blasting Megadeth, or a taxi and wondered if it worked the other way around. Thanks!

in my experience, these vehicles often have other clues that they are LEO's. Look for hub caps, antenna on the roof, spotlight on A-pillar, no car dealer license plate frames, etc, etc. this message will self destruct in 10 seconds

Well, I mean there are times that you have undercover/unmarked units, or people who might carry over their enthusiasm of their work into their personal life. I'm not saying that I intend for the car to be confused with a PPV/Interceptor, but as a subtle nod to solidarity, kinda like a PBA sticker on 4 wheels.

Had a friend years ago who drove a de-commissioned Crown Vic cop car. He's a big burly chap with a crew cut and a square jaw. Road rage was utterly nonexistent.

In my experience very very few guys drove anything that resembled a work vehicle away from the job. Lots of pick up trucks, suv's, etc. You could always tell the rookies cars in the parking lot, brand new camaro's, BMW's and the like. The divorced guys were driving 90's Tercels.

No real cop drives one those as a POV. It's generally fans of law enforcement (...the minority), wannabes (...someone that couldn't get hired, but works loss prevention or security), or those who want onlookers to believe they are law enforcement officials (...fake it 'till you make it?!?!) or who have intentions on impersonating. You can always tell the latter bunch because they tow the line of impersonating a peace officer (...a blue line flag, dark tint, similar antennas, the LEO style hub caps, leaving the "POLICE INTERCEPTOR" badge on the trunk lid, etc.). |

A co-worker from a previous job had a decommissioned CVPI. He thought it was cool for about a month, then realized everyone slowed down in front of him to below the speed limit thinking he was a cop.

I loved the Crown Vic police interceptors. They took a beating, and after we put about 100,000 miles on them they were bought by taxi companies to beat the shit out of for another couple 100,000 miles. But I wouldn't want to drive one on my own time.

I've seen UC cops driving minivans but I'm sure they couldn't care less about me bombing the passing lane.

When I worked Morality (drug squad) I worked with this guy who'd boxed professionally but looked like a 6'4 Mr Bean, seriously. He had a school crossing guard uniform he'd use on occasion when we worked in Regent Park. He'd help the kiddies cross the street while we were setting up. He'd do the observations while the UC did the buys and then he'd jump in for the choke. Funny as fuck watching the show when the take down took place and Mr Bean the crossing guard was choking (dynamic takedown slang, don't get upset) the client.

Oh well, I can still confuse civilians, I guess LMAO... The whole solidarity thing would've been a nice bonus when I hammer it through the [not-so] Great Plains (the most boring-est drive I've ever driven from Boise to Des Moines, and yes, I know there's no such word), but oh well.
But then again I got an Explorer for its comfort, decent power, technology, fold-flat seats, good reviews on AWD technology short of Subaru, and well: I'm currently an RF Engineer, and I figured it'd be a lot more official-looking if I am auditing cell towers in a vehicle known to be a workhorse than say, a Camry or Subie Outback, but not as bland/over-the-top utilitarian and not personal vehicle-friendly like a Chevy Express or Ram ProMaster (sounds like a bad porno name)... I'm also sure I'd have a lot less people prying into what I'm doing if I drove something more official-looking, which I'd be happy not getting interrupted every 10 minutes by some well-meaning people thinking that I'm stranded or even thinking I'm trespassing on their property while I'm on a public street .
