When I actually turned 21, or when I had some random piece of paper that SAID I was 21? I was able to use a pencil on my learner's permit to be 21, go into bars, and buy at local stores.

NY was originally 18 to drink. They changed it to 21 after I turned 18, so I got Grandfathered in. They didn't take the right away.

Was everywhere 18 and then 21? Or were some states 21 all the time?

19 is the magic age here in Canukistan. I was the designated purchaser for our crew from the age of 16. All the others got carded every time they tried. I don't think I've been carded more than a dozen times my whole life.

I very rarely got carded when I was underage. There was one club however that I could never get in.

Funny though, I was 14 years old and went to a club out in the Hamptons with my older cousins. I strutted in, head up high and no one questioned me. They were old enough to get in but they got carded. We were just laughing about this a few weeks ago.

I went through 18 -> 19 ->21 back in the day, and didn't celebrate once. (This may have been going between NY and NJ as they changed their ages at different times.)

There was a teacher at our high school who was always voted as the senior class advisor, because he owned a bar in a neighboring town and would buy any senior from our school their first drink on their 18th birthday.

Of course we should all be telling that click-bait pricing site's author to get off our collective lawns, for basing the chart on age 21 like a young whipper-snapper.....

I completely forgot that we went from 18 to 19 before we went to 21. The signs in the bars stating how old you had to be in order to drink read like disclaimers.
