You never drain a battery to 0% in a PHEV.

Yes you do. I owned a 330E and there was a significant difference in power when the battery was at 0% after long drives.

Fuel tank is only 16 gallons!?

That’s gonna be under 200 miles of range for us lead-footed folks!

I own a 330e and in sport mode it always recharges from the combustion engine to around 5 miles when it’s almost 0%.

I’ve driven it very hard on the autobahn for hours and I’ve never had power loss issues because in between pulls it always has time to recharge.

I was afraid of this before I got mine, but that shouldn’t be a thing. Unless you track it maybe, but there are better cars for that.

They were obviously super focused on weight savings.

That makes sense at speed and yes, regenerating is a lot better in Sport / Sport +. I played around for months on city trips and long drives across state and there was no electric boost at low speeds with the battery at zero. Hopefully they address that here.

Nice looking car but I’d still want BMW to bring the M3 Touring to the US. I think that would sell better than the M5 Touring.

At 20mpg hwy + 25mi electric, that's 355 miles total range in the best possible scenario with you driving like a granny.

If you drive it like its a M5, yeah, 200 miles. That's a lot of stopping to fill up if you take it on vacation.

It was impossible to drain to 0% in my Cayenne E Hybrid, and my XM base. Between regen braking and the ICE charging while you drive, I have never been fully to zero (even when showing just dashes for battery percentage available on my Cayenne). This is the PHEV system out of the XM, so I doubt you can drain fully to 0%. Also, you charge the HV battery when in full sport mode on the XM, this M5 should, once again, be the exact same as it is the same engine and electric motor and HV battery set up.

As amazing as I think this beast looks, I'd need to test-drive one at a promotional ///M event before committing to the price tag.

So no carbon fiber roof then? Or since the glass roof is standard we will get the carbon fiber roof with carbon upgrade? Carbon roof is BMW M Identity. The touring would look great with Carbon fiber roof.

No carbon roof option for the touring. Just a glass roof that apparently doesn't open.

I'm pretty certain no leather on the door pockets or upper parts of the doors, at least with the leather options currently available. Two full leather options will become available at the end of Q1 2025 FYI.

What a bummer! I wonder what the rationale behind that decision was! Glass roof a few pounds lighter than CF roof? They should have kept CF roof as an option. So if I’m getting the carbon exterior package I’m not getting a CF roof with it? That’s interesting!

Negative… the PHEV powertrain/BMS wont allow it. It forces the ICE on to recharge/keep the HV pack from 100% discharge… it’s not good for the battery to drop to 0% SoC.

My guess is this will eat up at least half of XM and X5M demand and win over Audi avant and Merc estate buyers.

Anyone know real world MPG or MPGe? Didn’t see it in the facts and figures.

It's interesting that they're base pricing it $6-7k under the Avant.
Given that it's a newer car priced below an older direct competitor, I suspect they they looked objectively at their own product and knew that they had to add value as an extra benefit to entice that demographic away from Audi cause the car couldn't do it on its own merits.
It's the only way to explain it, and it might actually work causer a lot of us rushed back to the Audi site to remind ourselves of the alternative.

This is a travesty. Seriously what were they thinking? What’s the real world mpge in regular driving? Let’s say you want to dead head it to the mountains 400 miles away with limited fuel stations. Two fill ups? The point of this car is to go on adventures…!

I saw the M5 in person the other day, it looks very cool, much better than an i5 due to the wider body. However, the body panels still feel a bit awkwardly tall for a sedan, the same as the i5. I think it's because of the space for a battery pack. But it looks much more natural with a touring.
I agree. Touring looks better than the sedan, but yes it is tall and a bit awkward.

For me the hybrid drivetrain, absurd length, and the weight make it uninteresting anyways.

All the German brands are moving toward making anything above the subcompact class a literal tank in terms of dimensions.
