Don't park in two spots. Just seeing someone parked on the line causes daydreams of leaving them a message in permanent marker on their parking job. And definitely don't park sideways, you will get boxed in and wont be able to get out.

Now, I know this depends on where you live and places you go, but people generally don't like BMWs or their owners. So what you are doing is actually making them take notice of you - and saying "don't mess with my car, or park your POS near me". That makes people want to challenge you. You're lucky that so far they have only made a point by boxing you in... it's only a matter of time before someone keys your car or dents in deliberately.

My advice is to find an end spot, preferably the right end (50% chance they won't have a passenger) and hug the edge of the space. This will help protect you from door dings without putting flashing neon lights over your car that say "I think I'm special". When ends spots are not available, I try to find other high end cars that are pretty new and park near them.

There is only so much you can do - but I think your method is antagonizing, and will ultimately lead to the very type of damage (or worse) that you are trying to avoid.

U gotta stop being so OCD about the car dude! Car's get damaged. Its life. Whenever you finally do get that first bit of damage you're likely to have an aneurysm. So just relax and enjoy your car!

Oh, and taking two spots is absolutely rude and unnecessary. Please stop doing it.

Honestly, when I go to Costco or Fry's, I just park in the back. Empty spaces, lots to choose from, and less chance of getting dinged up. Take advantage of Fat Obese America, no one wants to walk 200 feet to go shopping.

IMHO, you're a friggin duschebag and if your car gets keyed I'll laugh...

I don't EVER condone double-space parking in public lots EVER, PERIOD. If you're really that paranoid then don't drive your friggin 'house' to the market; or if you're such a baller, then hire someone to follow you around and park/watch it for you. Why should someone else be denied a spot just because you lack self esteem and need to feel important by parking your life's validation like a douchbag for everyone to see?

Hey watch it buddy, I'm American and ALWAYS park near the back of the lot and hoof it. I agree it's pretty much the best option because you're not denying anyone a parking spot, which shows respect for others, which is at the root of the irritation. Even if the lot is empty when you arrive, it could fill up quickly while you are away. Double-space parking in a public lot just a douchbag move. If you're fine with being a douchbag then rock on & post pics when you get keyed!

NOW THAT IS NOT RIGHT!! This is why you carry a valve stem tool in your glove box. No damage to the car next to you, just a couple of flat tires!!!

I agree with the vast majority of posts. Every time I see a car a double parked it makes me wish I had a beater to park on top of it and I think it should be punishable by death (maybe a little excessive) to scratch or ding other people's car's but, double parking just irks me that much.

I don't think anybody cares about they way their car looks much more than me but, I still find the strength to use the "hug the curb" method over the "I'm so fuggin special I need two spots" tactic.

I've had that happen too. This guy in your picture is obviously a complete jerk-off. I think I would actually have to wait for him to come back to his car, and ask him WTF... did you do this so you could deliberatly ding my car? Have I done something to offend you in some way? And, assuming it's a young punk (about a 99.999% chance) I would explain that if he studies and works hard, in time he will be doing well and he might choose to purchase a really nice car that he loves... and then some dipshit can do the same thing to him... I would say all that without being upset (unless the asswipe actually DID ding my car, in which case it would be a different conversation altogether) in the hopes that the dimwit would be embarrased and might not do the same stupid shit in the future.

Many years ago, while I was in college, the commuter parking lot would often be full, and I kept noticing one idiot parking a Honda Civic(!!) across two spaces, while I am circling the lot looking for a space. After noticing this for a week or so, I finally stopped, scrawled a note that said: "You really should learn to park in 1 space - otherwise some jackass might write this note with his key in your paint, if I forget the paper next time!!"

It was always parked in a single space from then on. I found out a week or so later that it was driven by a graduate teaching assistant who was teaching one of my classes. Never told him I left that note.

I still despise people who can't figure out how to park in the damned lines!!!

Great website

I agree; this type of obnoxious self centered behavior only reinforces the negative stereotype that BMW drivers already have and increases the chances that some innocent owner gets his car keyed.

And while we're on the subject of a-hole parking, what about all those inconsiderate jerks who illegally use their grandmas/aunts/uncles handicap placard.

Two times that I parked taking up two spots in the past month it has backfired on me. One time I parked late at night at a restaurant with about 30 spots all around and when I come out, so asshole decided to share the 1/2 spot next to me parking super close. Then of course I have to break out the flashlight and spend 10 minutes checking my car up and down on that side.

This evening though was the ultimate in backfired parking. I take up two spots in a parking garage as I go into PF Changs to eat at 10:30PM. I come out 45 minutes later and two SUVS are on either side of me and wedge me in like jelly in a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. They both thought they'd join me in the two parking spots I was taking up. Being that both sides of my car was in danger I was probably in that parking garage 15 minutes checking my car at all angles. AMAZINGLY, even though both cars were parked mere inches from mine, I wasn't even dinged. Obviously, the driver of the SUV to my right had some mad skills getting out and the one to my left probably didn't have a passenger.

Anyhow, that's my rant for tonight. I'm thinking the next time I take up two spots I'm just going to park horizontally. Then, maybe just then, the idiots will get the message. I think I'm going to start to carry some pre-made post-it-notes in my trunk too.
Consider yourself on notice...
