Like what Audi and Lamborghini have done. Brings down development costs.

The R8 is exactly that, a shared platform.

Why not !?!

Interesting. It might end up competing directly with this new SLS replacement from Mercedes:

McLaren & BMW should apply today's technologies to this existing model, and it would be THE CAR.

I like. Collaborations are becoming common due to high R&D costs and the need to share fuel saving technologies.

Saves large amounts of R&D money, both have their strengths, such as McLaren with their CF chassis, sports car tuning and BMW with their engines, superior CF manufacturing volume, etc.

Would love nothing more than for BMW to step up to a halo car worthy of succeeding the M1

McLaren has some really fantastic engineers, but I worry about the soul of the car. Successful supercars are more about how they make you feel than just simply going fast.

BMW hasn't been doing a good job of evoking emotion in regard to their cars for a while now either.

Hope for the best I guess.

It is just a ruse... Just like the M100

Just another tactic to get people excited about the brand and just in time to order the M2

I wouldn't put much effort into the thought until BMW provides something more concrete

Just like the promised electric turbos and kers-like system... And you have to spend more just to get water injection now

Hopefully BMW finds it roots somewhere

I don't think it is a guaranteed home run. Split the costs, split the volume of cars sold? I invest $100 million and build 2000 cars or we both invest $50 million and each build 1000 cars. I don't see the number of cars sold being far greater because there are two brands.

It's going to take a lot to top the last McLaren-BMW project: the F1.

Yes, my thoughts exactly. Whatever they come up with (if anything) will immediately be compared to the F1. That's a tough act to follow...

I have been hoping the two get hooked up for a while now. Next thing, BMW should re-enter F1 and partner Mclaren by providing engines. BMW needs to show Honda how to build a proper F1 engine!

Quad turbo v8?.... Why not just a twin v10/2. I never can understand why companies think it's better to go smaller. Having 1 turbo per two cylinders is outrageous and unnecessary.

Why does McClaren need BMW is the actual question?

They have their own supercar Division that is doing great and really makes no sense.

Mclaren does not have the depth of engineering when it comes to engines unlike BMW. They dun even produce their own engines. Their current V8 is produced by Ricardo and their previous F1 used a BMW V12. This arrangement probably suits BMW more as it won't cannibalize their sales with no mid engine supercar on offer at the moment.
