If you want a sub-3 four-door passenger car with a BMW badge, remain optimistic.
Perhaps the most compelling theory to explain why this car is not being released over here simultaneously with the debut in China is that BMW has other plans for this segment in the US. Those plans could be a 2 Series Gran Coupe sharing a RWD platform with the next generation 2 Series Coupe and Convertible. Of course, this is all still very speculative, but there are rumors to this effect, including some support from SCOTT. Nothing has shown up on the future vehicle roadmap yet, but it's still early (current 2 Series won't even reach midlife until next year's LCI). So the downside is, if it is coming, there's still going to be a bit of a wait. |

I am not interested in a FWD car but that doesn't mean BMW can't build one that is fun to drive. The Mini Cooper, VW GTI and Honda Prelude all come to mind. I also had an 86 CRX that was wonderful for Auto-X. Basically get the nose past the apex and floor it....
So, to each his own, but don't assume a FWD car will not be rewarding to drive if the engineers do their job. |

I see no reason why a RWD 2er coupe/gran coupe can't co exist with a cheaper entry level FWD 1er saloon (sedan). 3er and 4 GC co exist and they are both RWD. Having said that if the next 2er also goes FWD then someone on the board really should see a doctor. |

PLEASE, NO M!!!
I think a base model 1er sedan would do huge business in N.Amer if costs were kept reasonable. But please keep it what it is, an everyday car with more room because of the fwd packaging.

There is so much that can go right with this car, but something tells me that based on the recent years at BMW, there is going to be more wrong with it. This could end up being the e46 M3 sedan they missed out on, but they will probably let history repeat itself. The thing that I just cant understand is that with all the incredible reviews the M2 is getting, for them to refuse to give us a sedan version would be an abomination. I can't imagine them not giving a shit about enthusiasts any less than that.
I've switched over the e46fanatics and am doing my homework on how to build a proper e46 M sedan. BMW, this is your opportunity to either get my money, or lose me to an S3 sedan or secondhand market.

Looks fine enough, but leave that mutant FWD BMW in China.
This car is terrorizing my ability to buy a small, fun, and RWD sedan. I'm writing my elected officials to add this vehicle to the US No Fly list. |

Weird that it has the hood line above the BMW logo, while the concept didn't, and next gen 5er and 3er doesn't have it aswell..I thought that the newer ones would loose that.
And also I can't understand why FWD cars like this, X1, minis etc, have that ugly gear lever instead of the usual one. |

Why not? Having a 300 HP turbo 4 with AWD wouldn't be so bad. No different from an S3 or CLA45 AMG.

BMW should just do away with their number system for car names at this point since it clearly follows no rules whatsoever.
I can't wait for the BMW 135xdrive Grand Touring Coupe M Sport Diesel 30 Jahre Edition personally.

Regarding the global environment, it’s tragically ironic that BMW AG contributes to China’s widespread environmental and health problems while peddling its “EfficientDynamics” marketing campaign to clueless Westerners who believe they’re saving the planet by driving “greener” cars. Meanwhile, hundreds of millions of Chinese citizens living in industrialized cities half way around the world routinely breathe in heavy hazes of smog on a daily basis. Does anyone else find it all extremely hypocritical of so-called “green” Westerners who demand cheap (usually inferior) Chinese products from a country that has virtually no environmental regulations, human rights (or intellectual property rights)? On a side note, I’m pleased to announce that this is my 1,000th post…

Honestly wish they would bring the active tourer to the states. There is a good amount on the roads in Europe and it's honestly a pretty practical and much more attractive car then what it competes with. The m packaged ones look pretty neat. Totally feel that it would succeed in the states. Would love to rent one sometime next time I'm back in Europe to get a true honest opinion on the driving feel.
