Call me nasty mcdirt but I don't get this issue at all. I won't touch anything in a Porto john but regular restroom I'm cool. Now I was in the army and did spend a lot of time in the field. 7days without a bath all the time. Taking off MOPP suit and realizing how well they keep the smell in, oh yeah. And the desert has a way of making you forget you're not clean. The germ idea just never really bothers me.

Most people just suck and are disgusting when it comes to personal hygiene and public health.

Even worse think about the last time any of the door handles or anything has been wiped down in your office. There's 1 cleaning guy out of a crew of 10 in my office who cleans properly, God bless him.

Between the negligent, oblivious, fake 3-second washers, and those who somehow don't know basic hygiene, it all sucks

Was talking to a coworker today and he said he would say something to that person if he sees them not washing their hands at work. Perhaps something like "eww you didn't wash your hands!"

While I think it's gross, it really isn't my business so I would never say anything. Would you guys say something? I feel it would probably do more harm than good.

No, but I may try to see if I could get a nickname to catch on. Like "Captain Poopfingers" or "Old Yellerhand"

terrorists trying to kill us off:

Bacterial, viral, fungal and parasitic diseases exist on the skin and in mucus, blood and other body fluids. Some germs are transferred through inhalation and others are obtained by touch. The transfer of fecal-to-oral diseases occurs when an infected person does not use good hand-washing technique with soap and water and handles food content or any substance that enters the mouth.

Did your mom rinse your booboos with hydrogen peroxide for you until you were 24 or say rub some dirt on it and don't be such a pussy?

If you think not washing your hands at the office is bad, you should see some of the people I deal with on a daily basis.

I build water and wastewater plants, so use your imagination as to what kind of shit people get on them and then go eat.

I see we have more in common than I thought.

I try to be clean, but at the end of the day, it is what it is. I just don't really think about it - that's what you have an immune system for. No need to be afraid of the world.

So, what you are saying is the 5-second rule doesn't apply in your work environment?

This sums it for me exactly.

My wife and I are ALWAYS reminding our kids (and they are indeed doing it at 8 & 10) to ALWAYS wash their hands at school, friends, away from home and home. It is THE # 1 cause for "bacterial and viral infections".
The moment I set foot into a restaurant to eat, we all go and wash our hands first. And as soon as we step foot in the house, that is the very first thing we do.

Do you ever let the kids get dirty, like kids are supposed to be??? How to train the immune system if never challenged? How to train the biceps if never stressed??????

UncleWede raises a good point. Washing your hands so frequently will definitely kill bacteria, but it kills the weakest bacteria first, leaving only the strongest bacteria, thus creating super-germs. You need bacteria in and on your body to combat the bad germs. This is why people take probiotics and why overprescription of antibiotics is bad.

I think the only time I make a point of washing my hands before eating is immediately following some particularly dirty task or if my hands are legitimately covered in some substance, ie, following a day playing paintball outside or being covered in grease/oil from working on the car.

3 second rule is still applicable in all environments.

Like I've said on various other topics, moderation is key. Being a dirty bastard is one extreme, but so it being a germaphobe. You've got to build up the immune system somehow.

Yes. My youngest in fact is recovering from a cold the first week of school.
They absolutely play and wrestle with other kids and have had their fair share of exposure and illness. But what responsible parent wants to allow or contribute to their children getting sick? I know I don't. We have friends for example, that have kids that seem to ALWAYS be sick with something! I have seen them in action. And let's just say... An ounce of prevention would go a long way.

Plus there aren't nearly as many germs on things as people think there are.

Quote:
Germs & Health

The "five second rule" is not valid when food is dropped on the floor.
Many objects that people touch every day are dirtier than a toilet seat, including cash, keyboards, and kitchen sponges. In fact, a toilet seat may be one of the cleanest surfaces in a HOUSE.
Toothbrushes are generally contaminated with fecal coliform, but not to a dangerous degree.
Hot-air hand dryers are less sanitary than paper towels.
In public restrooms, the stall closest to the door is used the least and stays the cleanest.
Covering a sneeze with your inner elbow is more sanitary than using your hand or a handkerchief.
Healthy people cannot easily avoid germs if a sick person makes no effort to contain them.

Don't get me wrong, I wash my hands as soon as I get home but that's after opening doors to Grand Central and riding an hour on the train. Gotta wash that NYC off me. That said, I rarely wash my hands on the weekends when I'm hanging around the house.

more like 5 minute rule.

but no, it does not apply.

Today I was visiting a site and a worker who had been down in one of the poo basins all day working, took his gloves off and ate his sandwhich without washing his hands. His reasoning was he was wearing gloves so his hands arent dirty.

On another note... I just want to give props to duck fat for the terms "geyser of do not want" and "mist of toilet". I was literally laughing about that hours later.
