Honestly don't even need Carplay - iPhone's capabilities are pretty good even without carplay over bluetooth. I'm still able to select specific specific and use Siri via my steering wheel - don't need much else.
For directions I always send the address to my car with the BMW connected app beforehand

BMW should realize that they can no longer nickel and dime their consumers and get away with it. After all, their vehicles really have no redeeming qualities over the competition anymore.

Point is that, brands like Honda include Carplay in their $17,000 Fit as STANDARD.

Carplay being terrible anyway on BMW aside, whatever happened to just owning shit? You buy something, its yours. No worry about it not working later until it actually breaks.

I find it mind blowing, BMW can charge in the first place. I have a Merc and ford, both come with CarPlay for free.

This allows the customer to switch devices,” he said. “A lot of people buy [CarPlay] and think it’s okay, but sometimes they stop using it or switch to Android.” “

not paying for the " feature" allows one to switch devices eh?

it's a better deal, most BMW owners don't stay more than 3 year with their cars even less with their smartphones.
(assuming that you live in USA and leased your car from new)

BMWs integration with CatPlay is AWFUL. I wish it was a subscription service when I ordered. It would have saved me $300. Damn sure I wouldn't subscribe!!!

I understand why they want to extract every last penny they can, it's what most companies do. But why anyone would consider them a good company or an enthusiast friendly company is beyond me. That day is long gone. This just fits into the pattern of decisions we have seen now for the last few years.

When BMW removed the cf driveshaft from the m3 we were somehow told it's actually a benefit and when that didn't fly then it was that BMW was forced to by regulations. This is the MO of their truly unprofessional and inept marketing/pr department.

Right now this is being spun as a "benefit" which will fall flat here, then we will be told how some external force made them do it
Be sure to let's us know if the CF driveshaft fits next to the new gas dpf.

For everyone complaining about carplay.. What's so bad about it? When I got it on my loaner 2 and 4 series I thought it was the greatest thing ever. I miss not having it on my F10...

BMW assumes people can't do math. $300 car play with a 60% residual means you pay $120 for car play on a 3-year lease. Now you get to pay $160 for car play on a 3-year lease.

So tell me again, how did this save me money?

It's not free. It's built into the price.

High level companies such as Porsche and Exxon engineer around issues. Accepting lazy solutions gives you a lazy product.

+1. How is CarPlay different in other cars? Isn't the user interface and functionality the same in other brands?

Also the expiration on my CarPlay is 11/2037 so it's 20 years. Pretty sure it'll be so outdated by then anyway.

The thing that kills me is instead of just making it standard like most other automakers..... they are wasting engineering resources to now have to build into the software the remote subscription management service, the UI where you subscribe, payment processing, in car software to manage whether you are subscribed or not

Resources could be spent on much more valuable consumer experience software like:
android auto
remote start from the app
more feature customization
ETC ETC ETC

For everybody saying: "in other cars, it comes standard"..... you really think you aren't paying for it somewhere in the price of the vehicle?? right...

Ultimately the market will determine whether CarPlay subscription can work. So far, I don't see it succeed unless more compelling value is offered.

No way I'm paying $300 for car play or a subscription. I can afford it but on principal alone, not a chance. I've owned 5 BMW's including a few M cars and stuff like this makes me dislike BMW and Apple brands that much more.

First, they are not clear if Apple, BMW or both are revenue sharing in this cash grab (not that it matters but if one or the other doesn't have a hand in this it would be good to know which brand I should start to steer clear from more).

Also, Apple CarPlay isn't that great. Until they open it up to all 3rd party apps instead of the lockdown of apple walled garden it's not even worth it. I can't even use Waze with CarPlay. Forced to use Apple's inferior nav/mapping app. Pathetic and we can all see these companies putting corporate concerns over our customer needs and desires. Won't end well for companies that have this philosophy...

I guess the question here becomes, is BMW tired of paying the royalties for using CarPlay and handing the burden of the cost over to the consumer, or did CarPlay not get optioned enough times for BMW to keep paying Apple royalties on it? We know that Alexa is coming to ConnectedDrive soon, and the article says Google Assistant is too. Does that mean Android Auto is coming? Will they be subscription based too?
