It's easy for you to say living in San Diego. I live in NY and commute to NJ every day. Do I prefer driving a car? Yes. I have one vehicle. The X6M gives me the best of both worlds. The handling, fun factor and lets not forget the grin, along with the AWD and ground clearance I need to drive in the nasty weather. I know I can get a beater for bad weather but I'm not interested in driving a beater. Honestly though, if I ever decide to get a second vehicle (car), I would still keep the X6M.
I can see how that makes sense out there in the same way a vert was a no brainer for me out here. Oddly enough I always liked the X6, even though I heard it had mixed reviews. I thought it literally looked like an oversized sports car n think it makes sense to have an M for that model. To my astonishment it only sits 4! Which I thought was kind of odd. At least the model I drove.

Hopefully, they'll let the BMW NA to develop it like VW asked VW Mexico to develop mk6 Jetta.
I am, of course, half serious, but only half. If BMW already makes the SUVs, what's fundamentally wrong with making pickup trucks? If anything, these are more practical than the SUVs and crossovers and performance trucks like Raptor certainly have their place.
Something like this but with more sport and powah:
A luxury truck, I'm not seeing it and further more an M truck. That's blasphemy..or is it lol. Pretty sure I saw some concepts for a BMW truck, looked fairly odd and unproprtional.

Well, first time I saw one on the road I knew that I had to check them out closer, and my first test drive sealed it. Best combination of power and performance, size, comfort, and looks that I have found.

And so was the first x5 - a blasphemy. I think that BMW can reinterpret the small pickup truck in a new way. Who said you can’t take your truck to the track and turn some decent lap times? I want the M-truck to have air suspension so that it can go very low or very high depending on the need

I can only answer for myself. I came from an 6MT E46 M3 and continue to own a 2007 Nissan Armada.

Originally I was dead set on the Macan S, my reasoning was that I wanted something easier to get in and out of, which gave me a higher seating position, was as fast as the M3, would save more gas than my truck, and was actually comfortable to drive.

After the test drive with the X3mc, I was hooked. The tech, the power, the handling. I’d describe my reaction as giddy.

The Macan didn’t even hold a candle by any measure so I got the BMW.

I’m very happy with it, sans the self control I must exercise during the break in. It is literally the most amazing car (SAV) I have ever owned.

The money may be better spent on a 2020 corvette for some, but I wanted a vehicle that could drive in all conditions (traffic, snow, etc).

I had considered the non comp and even M40i, but did not want less than what I test drove.

Had I never driven it, I’m sure something like the M40i would have been great.

Need? No. Want? Hell yeah!

Edit - not doing so great with the MPGs unfortunately (11-12) . One of the few things I don’t like.

The E71 early models had a center console in the rear with 2 bucket type seats I actually liked that better than the current model without the console. You really need to drive one before you judge. I don’t have kids, just need a year round daily. It’s like a 6er and an X5 had a baby and I got the best of both worlds. It defies the laws of physics for a vehicle so big and heavy.

Side note. I did PCD for my ‘10 X6 50. They put me on the road track with 3 3 series. I’m thinking this isn’t fair putting me up against these little agile 3s. Pfft, I tore it up and went from being the lead car to being up the ass of the 3s and pushing the tail car. I wasn’t allowed to lap them. And it was a 50i, not the ///M

After just a BM3 flash/E30, these things are putting out insane power.

I definitely need one.

From someone who has a lot of physical ailments who has a hard time getting in and out of a car....yes. These hi-perf SUVs are right in my wheelhouse.

Nobody -needs- an M anything. However people are ready to flush large amount of money on it, so BMW makes one.

The more I think about it, the more I think this line of argument gets the story completely backwards. If the M2 CS makes no money, BMW does not make it out of the goodness of its heart, because they made money on something else. If they make it, it's because it makes money, either directly, or as an advertisement stunt. I suspect that the M2 CS and similar halo models are what makes selling 6 figures SUV possible in the first place.

Do my wife and I need a heavily modified BMW mutt sports coupe?

Do we need our V8 Porsche Cayenne GTS with PDCC Air Suspension?

Hell no, but it sure makes living day to day a little more entertaining. If BMW had released the X3M years ago we probably would have purchased one instead of going with the 958. The X5M is too long and we prefer purchasing CPO cars.

BMW and other companies are selling "stories" to the consumers. "Imagine the adventures you'll be able to experience in your powerful SUV." It's trendy to do outdoor activities and driving an SUV gives us chance to at least imagine the possibilities of doing them. I admit that we've never gotten even close to doing any off roading in my wife's M40i X3, but I'm sure I imagined myself doing so when I was deciding to buy it.

Short answer, no most of us don't need SUVs let alone full M versions, but it's exciting to imagine the possibilities.

Not reading 3 pages but yes. Some folks prefer, others may need an SUV. There's demand for it and it keeps BMW profitable. It's also the closest thing to an Uber Wagon we get from BMW here in the states.

Why we need an SUV:
1. ease of entry/exit. Anyone over 60 or with a bad back can relate.
2. room for luggage and passengers to/from airport and touring.
3. room for equipment/supplies (ie peat moss) for working in yard, borrowing pressure washer, etc.
4. room for golf clubs and friends when traveling to course an hour away.

Our 650 is the “fun” car but unfortunately can’t do any of above. The SUV is the “workhorse”. Do we need an M or even an M50i, NO but its nice to have that option.

I can understand 1) but the rest can be handled by wagons. I personally would choose RS6 or E63 wagon over X5M. Not even close.

Looked at them both. Nice cars but we strongly prefer the styling and handling of X5.

That's the problem in our society. People have been convinced that they need (must have) an SUV. There are many threads with people saying they are expecting there first baby so need to sell the M4/3. Why??? My wife and I raised a family and never owned an SUV or a van or a station wagon. Our largest car was a 1998 540i and we did just fine.
