There is a video on YouTube of a guy who was trapped because he took a smoke break and the elevators were under construction...trapped for 4 days over a holiday weekend.

I got stuck between floors in a local hotel many years ago. Solution? I climbed onto the hand railings and pushed up on the ceiling until a access panel lifted. We climbed up on top of the elevator. From there, I was able to reach a solenoid latch for the door on the next level and we simply walked out.

It was a bit creepy because the top of the elevator was filthy dirty, the cables were greasy and it was very dark.

I cannot swim in a pool alone because of a fear of sharks, yes another "victim" of Jaws, the sea I can understand (and I won't go in there) but a bloody swimming pool?
