Your best bet for getting BMW to cover any cost of repair is to obtain documentation of any port/distribution center repair. (If in fact that occurred, otherwise it will be a futile battle). It is not unusual for damage to occur during transport, loading, unloading, moving to port facility etc. BMW often has their own repair facilities at such port/distribution facilities. Any such repair should be on record. Note: most States have laws that state that if the damage exceeds 5 percent of the MSRP it has to be reported by the dealer to the consumer. So usually minor damage does not get reported to the consumer. Follow-up and see if there was any repair at the port/distribution center, your dealer should be able to access that info.

BMW NA will most likely cover that under a paint defect warranty as it is 100% that, its not even the top surface paint that appears to be all the way down to the metal. As long as you aren't a dick to them I don't see why they wouldn't cover this as warranty, they're usually pretty good in my region with stuff like that. If they give you a hard time shoot me a DM ill be at BMW north america in a few weeks and ill show it to some people.

At this point, I'm thinking about going out of pocket to get the damn repair done myself. Around $1,2xx is what was quoted to me by two very reputable body shops near me. At least I'll know the repair will be done right.
who denied the warranty claim? did an actual rep come out or did you call them and say your PPF guy removed paint? i just cant see this being denied by BMW if an actual rep gets involved.

You can spend thousands on paint protections with PPF, ceramics, etc End of the day: it’s a car you should have fun with. Small scratches and stone chips are NORMAL. Don’t worry about the paint too much 😉

To each their own. I have more fun in my cars knowing that the paint is protected, and it keeps the "new" look longer. Worth it for me, maybe not for others. Also keep in mind where some people live...I'm in Canada and they use a ton of salt on the roads in the winter. If I didn't get PPF on at least my front bumper, it would look like complete garbage after one season.

This.

In my area you can't find a single car with 10K on the clock that doesn't have chips all over it. It's mostly the Summer bugs, but any car that's low in the front will be shot-peened very quickly. If you're the sort to spend $60K on a car and not care, fine, but I'm not that sort. All my cars have PPF.

Just wanted to post this video for a slightly different technique for removing PPF. It's super hot water like I said earlier, but with a towel as well, which keeps the heat on the PPF. I've seen it done even easier than this, but still can't find the video.

Starts at 4:40 if the link doesn't take you directly there.

I guess it's all relative. I'm in Canada to and no issues with my bumper after years and years. I concur I have chips ofc but it's no where near a level of "comeplte garabge"

I don't like a bumper that has chips and scratches. To me that is "complete garbage" but you're right, it's all relative to what you consider bad or not. It's also why I said, to each their own. PPF isn't for everyone, but it is for me.

Did anyone use a paint thickness gauge to check if it was repainted in that area?

Had a similar, albeit different/less invasive issue on my ED M2 Competition a few years back.

TLDR: PPF installer, installing full XPEL Ultimate PPF, found some paint missing when they removed my front euro license plate (held on with ~3M double sided tape). To this day, I believe it was likely the installer's fault, but they swore it was on BMW and have immaculate reviews, and BMW ultimately covered the bill at a shop of my choosing. Thankfully, was only the front bumper for me - would certainly have been more bummed if it was on the painted metal panels. That being said, BMW NA will make this right under a goodwill repair, just needs a bit more pushing.

Sorry about the lack of update. I went ahead and got the paint repaired through a local body shop. $1,2XX for the fix. I've been patient as heck with the dealership and BMW. At this point I really could care less if BMW/Dealership comes through to reimburse my money.

I'll touch base with them later today and visit the dealership to pick up my license plates on Saturday.

I got your PM. Thanks for letting me know about your experience. I don't have any expectations for BMW to make this right. I will try to push a bit further and see if anything gets done.

Having worked in Distribution at Audi of America for years, I can confirm that shipping damage under a certain threshold may be repaired at port and not disclosed to buyers. In those cases vehicles would be kept at port for an extended time whereas others would truck load within a day or two. So if your car lingered at port, there’s a chance it was being repaired.
