From my perspective, this is a continued move by BMW to address their customer base - less engineering-focused true drivers and more tech wizardry and screen interfaces. Not a negative, just reality setting in. M cars are becoming street cars that won’t blend track and street capability as in the past. The weight gain across the model range seems emblematic of this approach.

The M5 will be a great street machine (unless you have to panic stop, and it will be a handful (two handfuls?)! It will also eat tires at potentially even more of an alarming rate than the F90.

Styling is subjective, but I prefer a cleaner, more classic design. The brilliance of designers is that they know the new design will grow on you.

I like the new model on looks a lot. But I suspect its drives like a massive muscle car, I cant imagine how they manage to make it heavier than a full EV Taycan. Its nuts.

Relax, people hated the G8x and now they love it. G90/G99 will get the same treatment in 2-5 years.

Looks are subjective.
1100 lbs of more weight is NOT.
That is literally a pathetic increase.
It weighs more than an X7M50i

No car is perfect, including new BMW models. The new M5 may not appeal to everyone and that is entirely expected during early launch time period. Only sales metrics will tell a more accurate story. The XM launch, initial reception, and sales to date serve as an accurate (if not sobering) story of what may eventually happen to any vehicle which doesn’t meet market expectations.

Waiting for sales metrics.

C&D had great things to say on they first drive. I think this will handle better than most are expecting. Sounds like it has a shitload of grip and a great front-end like the g8x.
You make a good point for most normal daily driving. But 3800-4000 lbs in the M3 is light years away from 5400 lbs. Anecdotally, the experience of my manual m3 v my comp x m3 was that 200 lbs of weight difference is extremely noticeable when pushing the car near the limits or even in spirited driving. The bottom line is the new M5 is not agile - it’s a straight line brutish missile. Yes it will be on rails, but you better not drive too fast, especially downhill. Add gear and a few adults and the M5 is over 3 tons.

Nobody has been complaining about the looks or interior of the G90

He didn't say much about yet, other than what we already know: the size and the weight being a result of the XM platform with an altered battery placement location and the gap in the rear diffuser being a result of some new tow package option/ regulation I think. Respectfully I can't/ don't share until revealed.

This one seems to be fairly close (90ish%) to production. They often still have some fake panels screwed into the front or rear bumpers and some reflectors stuck on in various spots.
These prototype test cars are usually parked in the garage unless they've already been revealed , but occasionally I'm lucky enough to catch a peak and chat a bit while they're pulling in.

Something tells me probably this Monster didn't fit so it was left outside...I think we're gonna need a bigger boat (or single garage door!&#129315

Interior of new BMWs are so standardized that they all look okay and functional. Not a bad thing to have simple and standard screens, Dutch furniture like dashboard and good materials. I recently drove MB and it was much more luxurious than BMW, but for some reason I prefer functioanal simplicity.

The exterior is a different story, most of modern BMWs are really ugly, except for 3, 8 series and X5. They managed to screw up M2 with sharp cut lines and ugly bumpers. I am not even talking about beaver teeth horrable grille on 4 series and M3. Some people may like it, but I will never buy ugly car. I look at my incredible gorgeous e46 M3 in my garage and enjoy that perfect design and proportions. The 340i is also very proportional classic BMW looking car. My hope for BMW design is that I see some improvement in their New Classe which is a good thing.

I think this g90 ///M5 is one of the best-looking models. I like how the side profile somewhat shares the E60 lines, and the front has F10 DNA.
The pre-LCI F90 model was impressive, but when they released the LCI version, I was shocked... I thought, "Is that really an M5?" The design was so soft and lacked aggression, making it look more like an M-Sport version rather than a true M5.

I think the new one looks killer with the wide body kit.

I questioned the new 5er until I saw the i5 M60 on the street. It has a lot of presence.

The M5 with the wider body is really going to 'pop' in the wild.

I loved the previous M5 but always thought it was too close to the regular 5 series in terms of looks. Same opinion on current M4 vs 4 series. I always appreciated that M2s and M3s were significantly wider than the standard models.

The older one looks like an athletic shark whereas the new one reminds me of a lazy alligator when woken up becomes insanely aggressive.
