^ yeah that's way too heavy. I want something that's light but strong (probably either doesn't exist or is going to cost me a fortune). I mean as long as it's light enough to take on a trip or hike and is strong enough to support 5lbs or so then it's fine. I don't need a super heavy duty one. My last one was pretty good as it was very light but it could only hold a few pounds of weight.

Just great... now you have me thinking of getting a lighter tripod!!! Mine is pretty heavy and bulky.

Haha niiice. But yeah usually you don't need anything crazy unless you have a heavy lens. For me a light one that could hold about 5 lbs or so is perfect. If I ever get the 70-200mm 2.8L I would get a mono pod as it's not a lens I would carry around on trips (unless it's a wild life shoot).

My camera the D300 with battery grip plus my Sigma 24-70 mm f/2.8 is pretty heavy. I do feel uncomfortable letting my camera take vertical shots and me not having my hands near it. But I'd like something strong yet light weight. Recently for all my business trips, I've been taking my tripod along with me. I'll have to weight it and compare it with some other top end tripods on the market.

Wow I bet that camera weighs at about 6-7 lbs. Search on Amazon. There are heavy duty ones that you can buy but if you want light, I think that's going to cost quite a bit.

Tripod selection criteria:
1.) Lightweight
2.) Low cost
3.) Strong

Choose any two!

I mostly use long exposures for lightning shots.

So here it is:

That's more than what I want to spend right now. I'll be sure to look into it though. I might just spring for a good tripod and be done with it.

It'll say "No flash" because there was no interaction between the D60 and SB-600. The flash was triggered manually a total of 3 times during a 5 second exposure. It's really fun to do

Under the Milky Way Tonight

This one may be against the rules. It's a 12 frame panorama of the night sky at Uluru, but the frames were taken over several minutes as the sunset was fading into dark, so the portion with Uluru itself shows more residual light than the night sky above. If that means that it's too "photochopped" then I'll withdraw it...

http://www.pbase.com/fvachss/image/111044366.jpg

BTW. The exposure time for each frame ranged from 15-25 sec. The lack of sharpness is due to my own incompetence in focussing on the night sky...

(Update, I assembled a 12 frame version that I think looks a bit better and replaced it above)

I just tried changing the link. Let me know if it's still dead. I've had issues posting photos on Zpost before...

yep link works now.... try uploading the photo using the file manager instead of hosting it.

however like I said, you gotta talk to vudoo cuz of the 8 exposures placed together and see if he'll allow it.

That is a siiiiiccck picture! I wanted to take a picture like that at Yosemite last summer but a recent fire obscured the sky at night. That is very nice though!
