^ yeah, thats exactly what they mean by AVERAGE, there is no way we'll see a crew-cab 1 ton dually 4x4 truck getting 35.5 mpg anytime soon...
Uh......... yes, familiarize yourself with Evo's and STI's, extreme, yes, possible, certainly. Most consumers don't need 300 horsepower though, so a less extreme 4-banger or a diesel with lots of torque would do the job just fine...

my only gripe about 4 cyl engines is the way they sound. HOWEVER, if BMW was to make a 4 cyl with an offset crank and firing order that would be awesome. please listen to a 2009 R1 for reference. if anyone knows more about this configuration please share...

I am continually saddened by such short sighted thinking. Sure it's correct that there is some debate as to what is actually happening but there is absolutely no denying that the world's climate is changing, that the human race could be causing it and having a detrimental impact on peoples lives around the planet. We are simply stripping the world of it's resources and whether this is related to global warming or not, it is not the right thing to do and is at the end of the day what is causing the hikes in oil prices and therefore everything else we buy. We should therefore be doing as much as we can to minimise our strain on the world's resources and hey, there are new industries and jobs being born out of it.

Before I woke up and switched from Saab to BMW, I drove 8 and 16 valve NA inline 4s and Loved them. It was the "feel" of the cars. They weren't very fast, but good on mileage and torquey as hell. Next my Saab 9-3 and 9-5 were cars with turbo 4s that put out more torque than HP and were reasonably quick.
Now that I'm with BMW, I have every confidence they can and will build performance-oriented 4 cyls with turbos or not that have lots of torque and deliver good MPG. Consider the current '09 WTCC 320i: 4-cylinder in line, longitudinally installed. Distribution: two overhead camshafts, 16 valves. Displacement: 1999 cc. Bore x stroke: 86 x 86 mm. Compression ratio: 11:1. Maximum output: 280 bhp @ 8300 rpm. Maximum torque: 245 nm @ 7250 rpm. Engine management: BMW Motorsport ECU 404. Lubrication: wet sump. Sure that's a race car but you make even 230-250 hp (with even higher tq) in a lighter weight 135i package and I'd be all over it. If not, i would even go with a 335d. From an everyday practicality standpoint, Torque over HP. Aaron

Back on topic: I'm all for the driving experience. My wife and I were just talking about how we seldom realize how much power our 335 has during daily driving. The total experience is still there, but the horsepower is seldom used. |
