One thing to note is that the hardcore food lovers note that there's a difference in taste from machine sliced meat and hand sliced meat. Carnegies meats are machine sliced (thinner) and Katz is hand sliced (thicker, and supposedly has more flavor).

I went to one of my best friends' bachelor party and then wedding in Pittsburgh. I got Primanti's both times. It's really not as good sober as it is drunk.

This is the only place you will go during the day and it is not crowed, if you show up after Midnight the place is packed. They use to cater to the working class rail works and truck drive who pick their stuff up in the middle of the night to deliver them to the stores in the morning. Worked with a client in Pittsburgh 20 years ago and made a trip to Primanti Bros. I have to concur their "all in one" sandwich is great tasting, but it's a mess to eat, so much so that it almost defeats the point of the thing being a sandwich.

There's no question of the sandwich's blue-collar origins. Outside of a visit to the dentist, it's just not polite to open one's mouth that wide in the company of others. LOL

Most probably in some random kitchen in a sleepy neighborhood somewhere. Many are the sandwiches I've "invented" out of convenience and hunger.

There are quite a few "mash up" sandwiches that I've made over the years. I loved all of them, but unfortunately they were all "one time" creations of convenience, so I can't really call them "official" sandwiches and I have no idea when/if I'll ever eat another one. Here are a few examples.

• Leftover hamburger, caramelized onions, baked beans and coleslaw on raisin bread with Italian salad dressing and Dijon mustard.
• Fried egg, onions and crab meat on rosemary bread.
• Deviled eggs mixed with a bit of Miracle Whip and used as the spread on an otherwise conventional cheeseburger.
• Barbecued or vinegared pork and apple-pie-apples with cheese, usually brie or St. Andre, and using the slightly charred barbecue sauce as a spread on whatever bread is around -- This one I've more or less had in one way or another on multiple occasions as there's nearly always leftovers of these items after a summer cookout.

I'm definitely one of those people who, as goes food, is convinced that if one likes Prepared Food Item A and Prepared Food Item B, a dish/soup or sandwich comprised of both A and B will taste great.

We're not so big on sandwiches (see what I did there) like that down here but we did go to Katz when we were in NYC last year, I think I'm still trying to digest it
