Getting back to the OP, I agree with the modular approach idea. It's either you spend what you can just for a complete set or, like tools, build up a quality setup over time. A decent/good pair of speakers will hold up for a long time and, if you spec them right, will be useable for a long time to come whenever you upgrade your other hardware. I'd say get a decent receiver and some good fronts and center, then move on to rears and get a sub last. You can adjust the bass in the mean time and, once you have rear speakers, still have surround. Adding the sub is icing on the cake.
My setup is humbler than a lot of you guys', but I have a Yamaha rcvr tied into Klipsch reference series speakers.

i knew all the stuff about blose before. I'm just wondering if its worth to go all out even though we will appreciate it for the first couple months, and then put it on the back burner.
I was thinking a $500 budget, since we are getting a custom cabinet made and suede or some sort of fabric on the wall. But still open to better suggestions.

since your room isnt symmetric, a soundbar isnt going to suit you well. id say even the most basic 5.1 system would really outperform a soundbar if set up correctly. if you listening position is in the middle of the room, it would be best to locate your rear speakers ahead of that angled corner. that way the sweet spot is centrally positioned. |

There is a long couch against the back wall. The more im reading into depth about sound bars, the more i think going back to basics with a 5.1.
I've always had a soft spot for Velodyne subs. But are they really worth the price tag? I have a power condition, just need a new receiver and a 5.1 setup now. Neither needs to be over the top, but I dont want some run of the mill Chinese paper either.

velodyne makes some respectable subs and are well-regarded in most AV communities. however, if you want best bang for the buck, definitely do some research in some of the ID (internet direct) brands. they cut out the middleman and sell directly to customers so they are significantly cheaper than the big name audio companies and in many cases, they can keep up and even outperform many of the big name products in their price range. take a look at SVS, epik, hsu, ED, etc... not sure about their availability in your location though... |

bringing this back from the dead
Is a used definitive technology supercube 3 for $375 a good deal? From the sounds of it, it seems to be a year old and a showroom floor demo |

Have you checked Audiogon to see if they have had it and compare prices?
