DUI/DWI should earn you a 12 month ban from driving - no questions asked - no lawyer an get you off. Until it is, drinking and driving in the US will be viewed as an acceptable risk that, if caught (in Maryland anyway) will cost you a couple of grand (lawyers/fines) and the minor inconvenience of going to court.

In other countries - I will use the UK as an example, it's a year ban and no one will be able to get that reduced. If it is over .85mg/l you will probably have to do community service and be subject to a curfew. I know when I grew up there, I went to the pub every night of the week and it was two pints of mild bitter or Guinness over a two to three hour period if you were driving.

I'm not saying Brist don't drink and drive (they do) but the ones that get caught are royally screwed!

I have a buddy here who is on his second DWI and did not lose his license. He did a few weekends in the county jail though and a fancy lawyer got the fine reduced to $350!

I'm in my 40s now with kids. I just don't do it but I amazed by the number of people I know who don't give it a second thought.
