would you rather have herpe breakouts once a month on your lips for life, where everyone would see and it would be obvious? or would you rather have break outs on your genitals once a month for life where it would suck more but you could at least keep it private?

I think its more of a yes and no type deal. While 1 is generally considered to be above the belt and 2 is generally considered to be below the belt, a person can get either infection in either location. 2 is more severe. If you have 2, orally, chances are its bad. If you have 1 genitally, you'll most likely have less severe infections. I'm no doctor but this is how its been explained to me in my pathology classes.

Wow...you are making it seem like oral herpes is a death sentence.

It's REALLY not all that bad. Yeah, it sucks big time to have the tingling sensation every couple of months. But the key is early treatment. Once you have something like Denavir (a viral DNA polymerase inhibitor, I think), the replication of the virus will stop and your cold sore will be barely noticeable. Nothing like the pic above if you make sure you treat is early. Also, as you keep getting cold sores they tend to get smaller in size each time (over a span of decades), as your immune system becomes more accustomed to the virus.

Genital herpes are MUCH, MUCH worse.

+1. The drugs on the market are great. There really isn't anything more to do to control the virus. Vaccinations are the next step.

The current drugs drastically reduce the number of episodes and severity.

The virus that tends to infect the genitals is a lean mean a-hole of a virus.

So my doctor called me back today and he basically told me it's not typical for people to develop genital herpes from oral herpes. The herpes virus (HSV type 1) is mainly above the belt as Jaykay mentioned...but I should still be careful and wash my hands frequently. Getting tested tomorrow to have the doctor examine the severity of the cold sore...girls generally hate it when you don't go down on them so having a severe case of this disease would really fuck shit up

Glad its not 2. If its bad, your doc will give you meds. Depending on the extent of the lesion, he'll better know how to address. You're immune system will kick in after a while and also help suppress it.

Dont worry, everything will be fine.

I only go down on girlfriends, random girls dont get their tacos eaten. You never know what can be hiding in there.
