Actually they are! They are looking for a Porsche Driver.

Hyundai offers to race Mini after Porsche declines

There’s been an automotive stoush brewing over the last few days. The American head of Mini, a Mr Jim McDowell, who was a former Porsche executive, had issued a challenge to motoring and racing giant Porsche.

Porsche replied, saying, “While your challenge seems like a fun and lighthearted campaign, we’ll stick to racing the way we have over the decades. We welcome you at Sebring, Le Mans, Daytona or any other sanctioned race where there is more at stake than T-shirts and valet parking spaces.”

It then issued this video:

Now, Hyundai has stepped into the foray, offering to take Porsche’s place.

You’ve got to say that the Korean company’s boldness is commendable, but whether Mini views this as serious is another story. We’ll keep you posted on any developments.
Yeh its sort of a repost but looks like more and more articles are popping up over this.

Mini didnt have to win, they just had to come close. They will still use this to their advantage.

But who cares, its was a cleaver marketing ploy that got attention. What isnt a marketing ploy these days???

This.

Sure they thought it may be close. If they just happended to win because the P hit a cone or two or spun out, both had to be high on their hope list, then they could market the win. Now they can posssibly market the two seconds or twist it to their liking. I mean please, 172hp vs 385. And not 385 attached to a lawn mower. It's a freaking 997!

As mentioned I wonder why they did not bring a new coupe or at least the JCW.

Selling cars is the end protocal for manufacturers. As a marketing guy I would not call it brilliant but it was not a dumb idea either. I would like to see the results campaign, if done, and the subsequent sales data.

If you think Porsche would stoop to that, you are in for a long wait.

Porsche doesn't need to do that, so they won't. I'm sure Mini would love the attention of insulting billboards from Porsche, but Porsche surely just sees this whole thing as an annoyance.

Nah, the Murci is still liking its wounds from when the Evo was manhandling it. Plus, that car was discontinued, so nothing would be gained from Lambo.

Two seconds on an autocross course is a HUGE margin. Especially when Mini Coopers are very good autocross cars. The course was even designed to go in Mini's favor.

Epic Fail.

Even the video on Mini's facebook page is stupid. Cheerleaders, emphasis on "fun," etc. Who in their right mind would think driving a FWD Mini is more fun than a RWD sports car of any type, never mind a Porsche 911.

No offense, but everything about this campaign made Mini look more like a women's "cute" car than anything. I don't see this campaign appealing to any men.
