I don't think thats the problem.

Lexus might even be able to match BMW/Audi or even Porsche in performance one day...lets say they do.

The brand name doesn't hold. At the end of the day, Lexus just doesn't have that same special feel a BMW does, or a Porsche (even more so)...you're paying money for that in part.

Ie. 92K for an LS460 AWD...you're better off paying another 8 K for a Panamera 4, minimally equipped. Panamera will always put a bigger smile on your face in terms of status, and sportiness than Lex will.

No one is bashing Lex...people just feel they are STILL overpriced because they do not give you status or performance.

What they give you is 2nd tier luxury (LS 460 is a notch below the S class in opulence).

Lexus makes a great car, so long as I don't have to drive one; I respect their reliability, and I used to think the LS 460 was the best car in the world...but then I drove an S550 and Panamera. <--- thats generally how its looked upon if you have the money.

Again, great car company. Just not one you'd buy from.

i think it depend on how old you are too. I know this guy (close friend of my brother) who is in his 45 and swear that lexus was the best car he ever owned. mind you he owned an m5 and merc s class before and he was sick of the time he has to spend in the shop. he told me his lexus gave him zero issue, the ride was ultra comfy, no unwanted attention, etc....

what i'm trying to say is not everyboy prefer bmw, merc, or porsche even if they have the money to buy one. this is the reason why you see quite a few lexus around and their lux market share is pretty good.

Great point. It's also what keeps companies like Jaguar in business. Some folks could care less about sportiness, and vastly prefer opulence and cushiness. Plus there will always be a douche factor to the German brands, and Lexus (and oddly, now Hyundai) don't share that, they're more of the "everyman" sort of car, even when they're not priced like it.

I really have no idea why Lexus priced this car at 400k.

I mean whats so special about it?
Is it Speed? not really
Technology? kinda? but a GTR can probably smoke this around the track
Design? kinda have mixed feelings about it, great dash and some neat techie features, 1 car is coming to Manila, so I have yet to see it in person
Exclusivity? there are a lot more cars worth 400k that can offer the same with more "soul" and "collectibility"
Sound? based on the vids, I can say it is one of the best sounding cars I have heard. But it still isnt worth the price.

But dont get me wrong, if it was priced a lot lower, the LFA would be a spectacular car to have.

usually for car with full carbon body like the LFA, 400k is cheap.

Wow... People just need to stop talking about the price. Full stop. Only when you're making at least $500,000 before taxes will this even concern you. And even then, $500,000 is probably not enough for Lexus to choose you. The only travesty about the LFA is that some of them will go into the hands of the uber-rich and not-so-uber skillful. You can bash and bitch and moan but the fact is, it's all lost in the wind.

Think of the tooling, R&D, and marketing. 500 units at $400,000 a piece is only $200 million. The LFA is merely the middle finger to all other brands out there. Lambo and Ferraris? Please... They are the Toyotas of the super-wealthy.

The only other limited-production vehicle that I'd have is the Zenvo ST1.

I think this car is going to become legendary. It's shape is beautiful in a fierce, functional, way. And the sound, oh god.

I think years after the ferraris of our time look like ass the LFA will still be a striking work of art.

Being not a European car snob, I can admit Lexus LFA is the baddest new supercar that shares nothing with anything else unlike other supercars.

Just phenomenal engine and it uses simplest and stiffest carbon chassis, LSD, normal sport suspension and weight distribution to handle superbly. No fancy electronic gizmos like torque-vectoring differential or anything.

From Evo magazine:

Quote:

There is nothing in the world like the Lexus LFA. It is more special and intriguing than the 458 and demonstrates an extraordinary level of passion and commitment. Bespoke and limited edition, it is also a genuine supercar that can scare the pants off you.

This is mainly thanks to its extraordinary 552bhp 4.8-litre V10 engine that does everything a Carrera GT’s does and then goes mad as it closes in on 9500rpm. Its uncompromising ride adds to the challenge…we were beguiled.

“It’s a beautiful thing, all the details, and it has all the integrity and functionality of a Lexus. Feels like a step up from anything else here,” said Meaden. “Very, very special,” said Metcalfe. Thank you, Lexus.

Quote:

"There is nothing that has felt this special like LFA does since the Macca [Maclaren] F1", says Chris Harris.

Evo UK best engine of the year, 2010:

p.s. It beat out engines of 458 Italia, SLS AMG, LP570-4, R35.2 GTR, Evora, R8 V10, GT2 and GT3 RS for this award.

CarAndDriver:

First Place: 2012 Lexus LFA

Highs: Stunning engine, amazing exhaust note, great brakes and steering, near-perfect handling balance, beautiful interior, feels as special as its sticker suggests.

Lows: Laughable trunk, poor rear-three-quarter visibility, unrefined transmission.

The Verdict: Lexus builds a Ferrari.

0 - 60 mph: 3.6 seconds (w/ launch control)
1/4 mile: 11.6 secs@125 mph
Skidpad: 0.99g

Second Place: Ferrari 599 GTB HGTE Handling Package

Highs: Supremely flexible V-12, refined highway performance, wondrous seats, surprisingly practical, looks as expensive as it is.

Lows: Comparatively tame engine sound, slightly vague steering, outdated navigation and audio systems.

The Verdict: Ferrari builds a Lexus.

0 - 60 mph: 3.8 seconds (w/ launch control)
1/4 mile: 11.8 secs@125 mph
Skidpad: 0.93g

I think you are confusing your badge snobbery for facts. In YOUR opinion Lexus is 2nd tier but there are many millions of folks worldwide that accept Lexus on the very same level as any of the German brands. As far as brand cachet goes, where is BMW's LFA competitor? Hmmm? Lets not forget that Lexus is still the number one selling luxury brand in the US as well (though MB is very close or may have caught them in the end). Also, Lexus continues to have a far superior customer service reputation and dealer network than any of the German competitors.

This is not to say that Lexus is the greatest by any means but, credit where its due. I'd still have an M3 over any Lexus (minus the LFA of course)....

The Adam Corolla, punt intended, review is actually very informative. Love his witty remarks and I take back my sly comment. Three sound channels that duct and diffuse higher pitch to the top and lower to the bottom? Wow, now that's attention to details.

Too bad I'd never drop 300-400k on a car though, GT-R will make me happy enough. Boy, I'd love to test drive a LFA.
