We are people who left other countries that had oppressive governments, or simply had no opportunity to support the life that we wanted for ourselves and our children. Americans are people who came here learned the language and social norms of the land, they put down the flag of whatever country they came from that was not good enough, and picked up Old Glory. My Grandfather was one of these people. He came from Sweden with a suitcase and little else. Once here he learned English, he did not teach his native language to his children, nor did he ever speak it that I recall. Interestingly, I find that it is primarily second and third generation Americans (and immigrants who have hopes of returning to their homeland) who seek a connection to their historical “roots” it is not the people who fled those shitty countries in the first place. So you ask, who or what is an American, and you try to put us all in a nice tidy box (white protestants, you are such an ass) so you can feel better about yourself, and more progressive. Americans will accept anybody that wants to be an American, just take a look around. I am Mister-Ski-Mask, and I approve this message |

American isn't a mindset or definable by actions. It's an arbitrary designation.

Bullshit with Koreans. Korean girls speak Korean to Korean guys even if the guy speaks English better, since they think it's all suuuuuuuuper cute and shit. If said Korean guy can't speak Korean too well, then they look down on them like they're a piece of shit. I fucking hate that shit (FYI I am Korean, and though I can understand it, my spoken grammar is imperfect).

I wouldn't call Sweden a shitty country, might have shitty weather but it is far from being a shitty country.
Not everyone leaves their homeland because they don't like it, some of us have a sense of adventure and want to explore the world, try new things. I was born and raised in England and didn't move to the US until my late 20's. I didn't leave England because I thought it was a shitty country, I wasn't oppressed, I simply wanted to try something new. I am English until I die, I live in the USA, I love the USA, I will defend the USA but I will not put down the flag to my homeland, denounce it or forget it. |

If you are honest with yourself, something was lacking in England for you or you wouldn't put down permanent roots here (unless you fall into the category I mentioned before of people who intend to make some money and go back home). Exploring the world is something you do on vacation, looking for a better life is something else entirely. |

While you are correct in theory, the purpose of the pledge of allegiance was just that. Allegiance doesn't exist without devotion. |

But allegiance to one thing does not preclude allegiance to another.

Let’s say you are meeting your wife for dinner in a nice restaurant. She is sitting at a table waiting for you, but at the table next to hers is your old girlfriend (to whom you swore allegiance, many years ago) she wants to catch up with you. Which table do you sit at? |

In opposition an allegiance doesn't exist. You cannot logically pledge loyalty to both an entity and the entity that negates it. There is no allegiance to either entity.

Can someone explain to me what US culture is?
Canada has a mosaic with many different cultures where some mix and some dont The US has a melting pot where everything is mixed. However with new cultures coming in daily wont this "mix" change? So really, what is the US culture, unless you are referring to nascar, guns, and being obese... Then i would have to say that is redneck culture. Flamesuit on |

Let’s say you were a German immigrant circa 1935, your dual allegiance (that you say is possible) is compromised when WW2 breaks out. You pick a side, your true allegiance is clear. |
