Sigh, growing up the only child in an Asian family, it's sad to say but I can sympathize with the girl. Some Asian parents are just bat shit crazy; see this.

Now it doesn't justify what she did at all (stealing a gun and threatening to use it on someone are serious offenses), but I can totally see how the mother might have just pushed her a little too far. As others have said, that pretty much destroys her academic career, especially since they used her name and picture in the news. No college is gonna want to touch her with a 10 foot pole. All that work is now for nothing.

BTW anyone notice that she's a minor yet they still posted her FULL NAME and picture?? That's f****ed up right there.

On a humorous note, if you're gonna hold someone at gunpoint, make it for a current model year car at least. Or maybe that was the biggest loan she could get under her mother's name.

Anyway sad story...

2. alittle makeup and I'd hit that.... when she turns 18
3. parent(s) may have promised her a car for grades or whatever

Well maybe she did it all so she did not have to go to those schools this could have been her way out...

A few people mentions they posted her name even though she is a minor, however, if DA is choosing to prosecute her as an adult then she is treated as an adult in all regards they do not protect the name at that point since the records and stuff are not sealed in family court.

Dude - I don't condone this by any means but I 100% guarantee that there's more here than meets the eye. I bet the mom is super strict, etc.

Note that the girl asked the mother to co-sign a loan for her. This implies that she (the girl) had every intent of paying for the car herself but simply needed her mother's backing so she could get approved for the loan. Mom was probably afraid of letting her little girl go and said no. Little girl who had probably been pressured to have zero fun and to focus only on college since kindergarten finally snapped (the valedictorian syndrome strikes again!)

Daughter = batshit crazy, absolutely.

Mother = apple probably didn't fall far from this tree.

You do not really believe that, in a country where the majority of the people buy stuff they know they can not afford...

stolen police gun? wtf? curious to know what really went down. think she deserved that car for getting a full ride to a ivy league though. as much as it is the daughter's fault, i think her family should share in much of the blame. hope the mom's happy for destroying her daughter's future which she likely cultivated step by step, and tarnishing the family name (where was the father in all of this?). so much for living vicariously through her daughter now lol. should have just let daughter keep the car or solve the problem from within the family.
