If that was your car I'd ask if I could fly over just to touch it and go "Ooohhh!"

First of all, performance is not just horsepower, it includes handling, breaking, road manners, etc. To that extent the 330i is very similar to the 335i, since those things have not changed with the motor upgrade. Also, I'll remind you that your statement was "I think only a handful of people care about HP.". I think most everyone cares about it, its just that they do so to varying degrees. Like you said above, its a combination, or luxury, brand name and performance. |

Sorry, but I'm still convinced that the majority of BMW buyers (including myself) bought the car because it is the sportiest luxury car that we could afford. The 3 series cars are a great compromise - nice to drive but they have a nice sporting edge to them, as well. I tried the 5 and the only one that had the right balace was almost $70k. Too much money for a car in my opinion. Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren 722 641 hp; top speed: 209.4 mph. Goes from 0 to 62 in 3.6 seconds? |

No manual transmission in the 350
I could live with the styling (although I prefer the E90). But, no manual transmisson available in the 350!
If BMW looses the manual transmission they will loose me as a future customer. |

I watched the review of the new C-Class on the British programme 5Th Gear and it looks like a winner. There is a lot of attention to detail towards luxury. I am not so sure about the sporting aspect, but it does have excellent refined performance. It will do very well for certain, Lexus will need to refresh their ISx50 soon.

I had a C32 and now have a 330i. Sort of in the same boat as you, GregL. I think they both make great cars. I like the "rawness" of the BMW - just seems more fun to drive even though it is slower than my Benz was. Might be the manual, not sure. Just seems a bit stiffer and it turns more authoritatively. I think the new C will be a really popular car -- will outsell the old one. For a lot of drivers it will win out over the BMW. For enthusiast drivers I think the BMW will continue to be first choice.

it is so funny, as i am a member of both MBWORLD.org and E90POST, to get both perspectives...
the mbworld guys are fair, they give ou guys the edge on handling, but take luxury feel for themself. I do think the C looks a lot better than 3 sedan, but i like the 3 coupe over both of them

Personally I've never liked the C class, I always thought it was the "I just wanna drive a Benz, Benz"
BMW's have always been about balancing performance, luxury and technology into a sexy package. IMO BMW's are for people who truly enjoy driving, and MB's are for people who want their drive to be as easy and comfortable as possible. AMG is there to help, but they can only do so much. I'm willing to bet there's plenty of AMG owners out there who never experience the full power their car is capable of unleashing. I cant say the same for M5, M6 owners. I'm sure they're out there, but far fewer. It's always been about preference when it comes to MB and BMW, and most people are pretty loyal to one or the other. MB makes some terrific cars, and if I had a fleet of luxury and exotic cars I would own one or two of them. If I can only choose one I'd take a BMW. |

Just went to pay a visit to MBWORLD.org and saw the same thread 3 vs C. All bunch of people telling how good is the C and 3 is rubbish. For me i think 3 is more fun to drive and more fun to Mod. C is for those over 40yrs old having no interest on car/modding car. By modding the 3 really make my day happier.
MayB one day we should really set up a war with the C owner. |

If you think about it they were probably designed during the same time frames and before Chyrsler was sold. Benz was trying to salvage the Chrysler name so using some styling cross-over points makes sense.
The 300M turned out to be a fairly successful car. Benz also did do a great job in dragging the Jeep name through the mud. I had a 90 Wrangler and they seem to watered down and soft now. As for the C-class, I simply felt too cramped in the car. It was also a little too stuffy for my taste.
