Can someone explain what happened with my trade?

PUT AMZN Strike is $110 and the price was $4.45 with an expiration of 2/10.

So I bought it yesterday right before earnings and obviously the stock is trading down 4% or so as I type this ($108.49) and I am OUT OF THE MONEY.

How is this possible??

You paid a premium for the put is my guess. Cost you $445. At 108.50 your up $150, but your break even is far lower. What price was the stock when you bought the put and what was volatility? Ideally you buy that put when momentum is high in the opposite direction.

You're so right. Options are a full time job to trade them correctly.
I did a week long training course around 08 with on-going coaching through Think or Swim. Back before TD bought them.
I did ok. Beat the market by a few percentage points. But the time and work I put in was not worth the extra gains. Some big wins, but there was always a loss that put you back just as quick.
I went back to buy and hold good stocks. Warren is my idol. Long term I'm doing a lot better.

I stopped doing it for this exact reason. It was starting to consume my life and impact my focus at my day job. Right whey you think you have it figure out you lose what made. I did alright, but it wasn't worth the stress as a hobby. It's fun if you have the time. My brother still does it and he has me read the charts. He has a good instinct for the emotional component behind trading. OR it's just luck. I was making a lot on Altria a while back. Right up until I finally went big and gave it all back But big for me was only 100 contracts. Some people have 1000s.

I like the bluechip dividend portfolio track. I have some retirement funds with this goal. I have quite a bit of crypto. Down 95%. Blockchain is the future, but you have to imagine the likes of Visa and Mastercard will build their own blockchain and not use something that already exists. Gaming and metaverse will be the next big crypto wave.

Thanks…there was low volume when I bought the contract but I was thinking Amazon was going to tank. I didn’t factor in the premium.

Good time for a reminder.

Posters on investing threads who disparage or cast aspersions invariably omit the personal situation and goals of the (individual, personal) investor.

An 85 year old has far different goals than a 30 year old.

Risk appetites vary widely between investors.

Rarely is information disclosed by posters regarding net worth, and other assets held besides the usual stocks, bonds and cash. For example real estate.

So the beat goes on. I find it useful to put investor demographics and goals in context when reading threads like these. All goals and needs are different, all starting points are different. Therefore the journey each investor takes is different.

Stocks you sold for a loss, can be deducted up to $3k per year... when I import my stock data, I had a good amount of losses, but its only letting me deduct a fraction of $3k.

Any tax geniuses know why?

The software should first offset gains with losses and then you can deduct app to $3K above and beyond whatever is used to offset gains (subject to some long-term / short-term rules). Did you have some trades with gains and some with losses such that the losses are being used to offset gains?

The other thing that could happen is a wash rule sale, where you sold something for a loss but then bought it back within 30 days. But that should be filtered out when importing data from broker to tax software.
