This is great news, in my opinion the big tailgate in addition to styling has been one of the biggest benefits of 4 GC compared to 3 Sedan. I believe many F36 customers would turn their heads to G20, if G26 would have been without the big tailgate. BMW is really smart that they understood to retain it

Sadly the photographer didn't take any video, when the tailgate was opened or closed, nor any photos from the back with the tailgate open. But anyway good stuff.

So BMWBLOG was wrong (fortunately) and ynguldyn was right already three years ago

  • Speaking of G26, its option details... just kidding - accounting for the just mentioned interface, if you know the option content of G22, you're good. Just add fake sounds for i4.
So does this mean that BMW really puts the new iDrive 8 with "flush dual displays" (dash and control display, just like in iX) for G26 i4 from the start, but not for G26 ICE until 03/23? I don't see the point here, because apparently both the i4 and many of the ICE models will be revealed at the same time around March this year, so why they want to make the ICE models to look "older" inside until two years, when i4 will get the fancy displays from SOP (August/September/November, still open)? This is sad. It was earlier understood that i4 will be almost identical inside with G26 ICE models, but that seems not to be the case.

I understand, if BMW wants those displays with iDrive 8 first into i4 and iX (to generate hype around those models), and not into ICE models, but why they just can't introduce those for G26 ICE already 03/2022 - or at the latest 07/22 MY change with G20. Waiting of two years is way too long.

Has anybody seen any footage of the G26 outside door handles in operation or "popped out"? Because those are totally different than in G22. Are those like in Tesla and they pop out, when touching the handle?

At least based on the i4 concept, since it looks like there's still an area to grab with your hand while the handle is not popped out, I think they will operate similar to a Porsche Taycan/911.

Yes. This is the only possible interpretation of the information available to me.

I've learned not to try and apply common sense to these decisions.

So if there is a CSL coming soon, with a limited run, just knowing how bmw looks at these things there must be something even better coming later?

Anything in the crystal ball pointing to a specialty model beyond the CSL

speaking about the new G20 interface....will be also implemented in the G80?

And, could anyone guess which will be the major changes of the G80 LCI expected in 07/22? Taillights only or more?

Yes. But it could potentially happen 3/23 with the G82 and G83 rather than 7/22 with the G20. That might make more sense than diverging the M3 and M4 interiors for eight months. On the other hand, the G80 is assembled with the G20 so it would complicate that a bit.

Probably just the tail lights. Definitely no headlight or other front end changes - those will wait until the G22/G23/G26/G82/G83 LCI in 7/24 due to the shared parts. Minor interior detail changes, such as switchgear, are possible if those occur for the G20.

I think whether the G80 follows the G20 will be driven by how extensive the update is. If it is mostly a cosmetic update to the dash and the UX and backend are similar (bigger screens but still separate displays, similar idrive controls, similar layout) as it seems to be in the iX I think the G80 will update. The only true M specific bits in that area is the gauge cluster graphics. And other than the screens themselves the actual parts for rest of the dash are already different between g80 and 82. The 3 and 4 share very similar interiors but not actually identical, I would imagine it would be more costly to have essentially 3 separate interiors in production g20, g80, and g22/g82.

Are the glass elements in the iX interior standard or are they an option like ceramic controls in other models?

Optional, but a lot of things that are officially optional end up being always included (that is, become de-facto standard) with a specific model trim based on the local marketing team's decisions.

Will the G80,G82 and G87 also get the new interface/infotainment/communications package, including the dash?I assume they will because they usually share the same general interior layout as the series cars they come from.I hope they don’t because I prefer the dash layout that the G80 and G82 have right now.

ynguldyn Is there any indication that a RWD G83 will be added at some point?

Your release schedule indicates that July will bring three xDrive M3/M4 models - the G80, G82, and G83. Any sign of a RWD G83 on the horizon?

Seeing how coupes are getting phased out, I doubt it'll ever happen.

In any case, the coupe has a different wheelbase compared to the 4GC/i4, so they would have to re-engineer the battery as well (and it would have to be smaller), so that makes it a non-starter for this product cycle at least in my opinion.

Leaving a cross-reference here for the spin-off thread entitled "Likely production schedules for the G87 M2, G80 M3, G82 M4 and their LCI facelifts": see here.

Giving credit where credit is due: the contents of that spin-off thread are inferred from scheduling reconstructed by ynguldyn in this thread to date.
